Rostec, a Russian conglomerate specializing in advanced technologies, recently made a significant announcement in the field of artillery. In collaboration with TsNIItochmash, a company within the Rostec group, they have developed a new electronics package to upgrade the Russian-made 2S9 Nona-S 120mm tracked self-propelled mortar carrier.

Despite economic sanctions imposed on Russia, Russian enterprises continue to demonstrate their capability to produce new equipment or modernize existing ones. Artillery systems play a crucial role on the battlefield, providing valuable support to ground troops, especially during conflicts like the one in Ukraine. However, controlling these systems and resolving firing tasks can often be complex and tedious processes for the crews. This is where the new computerized complex developed by TsNIItochmash comes into play.
This upgrade automates the control processes of the Nona-S cannon, significantly reducing the time required to resolve firing tasks. The computerized complex facilitates targeting, firing, and trajectory correction, thus enhancing the overall efficiency and accuracy of the artillery system.
The 2S9 Nona-S is equipped with a 120-millimeter cannon, the 2A60, capable of firing a wide range of ammunition, making it adaptable to various missions and targets.
Regarding protection, the 2S9 is designed to withstand small arms fire and shell fragments. Although not a battle tank, the 2S9 still provides adequate protection for its artillery role.
The 2S9 can reach a maximum road speed of 60 km/h. It is also equipped with infrared night vision systems, enabling it to operate effectively in low-light conditions. Additionally, it features an NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection system.
Operated by a crew of four, the 2S9 "Nona" is designed for seamless coordination among its members, enabling effective cannon control, target acquisition, and vehicle maintenance. The new electronics package proposed by Rostec is expected to further facilitate the cannon control process.
In terms of dimensions, the 2S9 measures 6.02 meters in length, 2.63 meters in width, and 2.3 meters in height. Its relatively compact size facilitates deployment and movement across various terrains. It's worth noting that the 2S9 can be airdropped with its complete crew inside.
