Description
The AAAB System is a bridge and ferry system designed for Turkish Armed Forces' fast and safe transport through the rivers in the battlefield. The vehicle is designed and manufactured by the Turkish Company FNSS. As nationally designed and developed amphibious bridge system in Turkey, the AAAB system has some additional specifications among its kind. It can carry 4 ramps on a single system. AAAB system has also standard anchoring system (both emergency and land anchoring systems), ballistic protection, and easy fault detection with CAN system. Four training sets of Amphibious Assault Bridge, delivered to Turkish Land Forces Command in September 2011, were subjected to challenging durability tests for land and sea tasks during 10 months and succeeded such tests. Being under mass production phase, 52 AAAB vehicles are planned to be delivered to the Turkish Land Forces Command. On May 2019, it was announced that Turkey and South Korea are combining their strengths in order to meet the Republic of Korea (RoK) Army's wet gap crossing system requirement. FNSS of Turkey and Hyundai-Rotem of RoK team up to offer the OTTER Armoured Amphibious Assault Bridge (AAAB) vehicles for the evaluation of Ministry of National Defense (MND), RoK.

Design and protection
The FNSS AAAB Armoured Amphibious Assault Bridge is operated by a crew of three. A crew cabin is available at the front of the vehicle. The hull and crew cabin are made of welded aluminum. The crew cabin provides a protection against firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. When travelling the side elements of the bridge are on top of the vehicle and are swung through 180 degrees to either side when deployed with the other elements being fitted using the on board crane.

Propulsion
On road, the FNSS AAAB uses an 8x8 chassis based on the PARS 8x8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier. The vehicle is motorized with a German Deutz turbocharged diesel engine, developing 522 hp, coupled to a fully automatic transmission with six forward and one reverse gears and a two speed transfer case. On road, the AAAB can reach a maximum speed of 50 km/h with a maximum road range of 600 km. With its diesel engine, automatic transmission, pneumatic suspension and hydraulic brake system, the AAAB system can climb up to 50% gradient, move on 30% side slope and cross a trench of maximum 2m. The AAAB system has two water pump jets that provide the water operations and 360° movements in the water. The system can operate in water currents up to 2.5m/s (10km/h).
Accessories
The FNSS AAAB, different from the similar systems in the market, has an 8x8 drive system with a central tire inflation system. For the safety issues, AAAB system has a self-recovery winch, an automatic fire suppression system, a fixed fire extinguishing system, portable fire extinguishers, and positive pressure NBC system. The standard equipment of the FNSS AAAB includes also Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control (CT), land and emergency anchoring systems, radio intercom systems, on board diagnostics system and automatic bilge pumps with manual override.
Combat use
As a ferry, the AAAB system can transport MLC 21 tracked vehicles. By deploying the ramps, which are carried by a hydraulic crane, and joining two systems, MLC70 T vehicle can be transported. In road position, the crane is on the centerline of the vehicle. By coupling three systems from ramp to ramp MLC100 W vehicle can be transported through a river. As well as the role as a ferry, 12 AAAB systems can be coupled and constructed as a 150m long bridge for crossing of vehicles up to MLC100 W.
