Ukrainian special forces neutralize Russian Kasta- 2E2 air defense radar station


In an operation near the border with Russia, the "Geese-9" special forces group of Ukraine's Defence Intelligence destroyed a Russian Kasta-2E2 (39N6E) radar station, a key piece of equipment for airspace surveillance. The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) highlighted that "due to fire damage, the Kasta-2E2 radar was rendered inoperative, resulting in losses for the radar service."

Before the Ukrainian scouts' attack, the enemy radar complex was monitoring airspace over the Kharkiv and Sumy regions, as well as over Belgorod and likely the Kursk and Voronezh regions of the Russian Federation.

The Kasta 2E2 is a medium-range, mobile, 3D low-altitude surveillance radar for both military and civilian use, offering improved performance over its predecessor, the Kasta-2E1, while retaining its advantages. It is designed for applications such as air defense, border surveillance, and air traffic control, capable of detecting aircraft, hovering helicopters, drones, cruise missiles at low altitudes, and sea targets.

Compared to its predecessor, the radar features data processing in two channels, allowing for an estimation of the target's approximate altitude. A plot extractor has been integrated for the digital processing of radar data, automatically detecting objects, identifying them, and measuring their coordinates. A notable innovation is the quickly mountable high mast, providing an antenna height of 14 meters to facilitate site selection. To increase detection range against low-flying targets, the antenna can optionally be operated on a 50-meter high mast. The integrated radio channel enables data transmission up to 50 km, and the system can be remotely operated up to 300 meters away by wire.

The complete system consists of an electronic vehicle, an antenna vehicle, and a vehicle for electrical aggregates. Operator workstations, accessories, and spare parts are located in two single-axle trailers. A remote operator station can operate up to 300 meters from the system. This advanced radar, with a range of 5 to 150 km and a 360-degree azimuth angle, provides comprehensive surveillance capability up to an altitude of 6 km, with scanning intervals of 6 or 12 seconds, making aerial surveillance more efficient and precise.
