Successful interception of ballistic missile by SAMP/T air defense system of Italian and French army.
Wednesday March 6, 2013, the Italian Army and French Air Force carried out for the first time, a successful intercept of a ballistic missile target involving NATO architecture, with their common system medium-range air defense system SAMP/T. After 300 km of flight, the target fired from an aircraft was destroyed by a missile interceptor ASTER 30.

The test was conducted at DGA Biscarrosse missile tests center was performed by the fourth Artillery regiment of Mantova (Italy) and the French center of military & aviation testing (CELM) of Mont-de-Marsan.

The successful test represents another milestone for the SAMP / T system in its capability to counter missile threats under NATO’s future missile defense architecture. It follows two previous tests successfully completed in October 2010 and November 2011 against the same type of threat.

ASTER 30 SAMP/T is the 21st century’s main, mobile anti-aircraft defence weapon for theatre protection. It protects sensitive sites and deployed forces against missile threats (TBM, stand off, cruise missiles, ARM) and aircraft, replacing all existing medium range ground-to-air systems.

The ASTER 30 SAMP/T system is designed to meet medium and long range air defence needs (force projection, protection of high-value areas and area protection). It can operate
in stand alone mode or can be integrated in a co-ordinated network.

In service in Italy and France, the SAMP/T system is the cornerstone of the contribution of these two countries in the NATO program to protect deployed forces against ballistic threat.
