The Armed Forces of El Salvador, in Spanish Fuerza Armada El Salvador is the official name of the combined armed forces of El Salvador. It has been in existence since breaking up from the United Provinces of Central America in 1840. The total active manpower of the El Salvador Army is around 15,800 personnel. There is also a Para-military force with 17,000 police officer.
The Land Forces of the Salvadoran Army is around 14,000 soldiers with the structure:
6 military zones with 5 infantry brigades, 1 Special Military Security Brigade, 8 infantry detachments, 1 engineer command ( 2 battalions), 1 artillery brigade with 2 field artillery battalion and 1 air defense battalion, 1 mechanised cavalry regiment (2 battalions), 1 Special Forces Command with 1 Special Operations Group and 1 anti-terrorism Command.
