MBDA has successfully completed a qualification firing of the Medium Advanced Air Defence System (MAADS), a new medium-range missile defence system. The system, developed by MBDA using the CAMM-ER missile, is set to replace the SPADA system as the Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) capability for the Italian Air Force, while also providing new capacity at medium range.

The qualification firing was a significant milestone, marking the first time that the Detection Centre module (BMC4I Sirius with evolved software) was tested and qualified, integrated with the CAMM-ER missile. The trial utilized a target drone simulating an attack by an enemy aircraft on the launcher, successfully demonstrating the capabilities and performance of both the missile and the entire system in an integrated mode.

MBDA is the design authority for the entire system, which comprises the Detection Centre module (including MBDA's Battle Management Command, Control, Communication, Computer & Intelligence (BMC4i) and Leonardo's Kronos Land radar), the Launcher, and the CAMM-ER missile.

During the test, the Detection Centre was able to detect the target drone, identify and classify it, recognize the type of threat, evaluate the type of defence to deploy, and command a successful launch of CAMM-ER to neutralize the threat. The two-way datalink between CAMM-ER and MAADS was also verified during the test.

The success of the qualification is attributed to the joint efforts of the integrated Italian and British teams of MBDA, with support from SEGREDIFESA (Segretariato Generale della Difesa e Direzione Nazionale degli Armamenti).

The CAMM-ER missile is part of the new generation CAMM family of air defence missiles developed jointly by the United Kingdom and Italy. It is equipped with an advanced active seeker and a “cold launch” system (Soft Vertical Launch), which is also used in the CAMM missile. The CAMM-ER missile features a larger motor, designed by AVIO, to provide an extended range. It is set to replace the Aspide in the air defence systems of the Italian Air Force and the Italian Army, and is also integrated into the Albatros NG naval system to optimize Naval Based Air Defence (NBAD) capabilities of fleets.
