FEINDEF 2023: Indra from Spain delivers Pizarro IFV simulators to Spanish army

May 16, 2023, Madrid - Spanish technology company Indra has initiated the delivery of state-of-the-art simulators for the Pizarro infantry combat vehicle (ICV/C) to the Spanish Army units equipped with these armored vehicles. The roll-out began with the dispatch of a section simulator, consisting of four vehicle simulators, to the Córdoba base. Indra plans to continue these deliveries to bases in Zaragoza and Gerona over the coming month, followed by locations in Badajoz, Madrid, Ceuta, and Melilla.

Spanish company Indra is showcasing a Pizarro vehicle simulator at FEINDEF, Spain's premier Defence and Security sector exhibition, which takes place from May 17th to 19th in Madrid.

Once all the simulators are operational, they will form one of the largest and most sophisticated joint armored vehicle tactical training networks in Europe. They will also represent one of the most advanced simulation centers globally. The plan is to connect a total of 56 compartments into a simulation network to perform realistic tactical and collaborative exercises.

Each section simulator comprises four vehicle simulators, with each simulator consisting of two parts. One part replicates the driver's position, featuring a three-degree-of-freedom motion platform to mimic terrain inclines and obstacles. The other is a turret compartment for the vehicle commander and gunner. This compartment allows the commander to train both within the vehicle and outside it.

The system emulates the two existing configurations of the Pizarro, a front-line combat vehicle with rapid mobility and platoon transport capabilities. The system can also network with other simulators in different geographical locations for joint exercises, including those with other simulation systems on the Army's training platform.

Indra's Simulation Director, Rafael Junco, elaborates, “The Pizarro vehicle simulator enhances tactical and collaborative training skills. It enables soldiers to prepare swiftly for their missions in complex scenarios, fostering communication and coordination skills both within their vehicle and with other vehicles in their platoon.”

The Pizarro Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), also known as the "Ulan" in Austria, is a tracked armored vehicle manufactured by the Spanish company Santa Bárbara Sistemas, now part of General Dynamics European Land Systems. The vehicle was developed collaboratively by Spain and Austria.

The Pizarro IFV is designed to carry a three-person crew (driver, commander, and gunner) and up to eight fully equipped infantrymen. Its primary function is to transport infantry onto the battlefield and provide fire support post-disembarkation.

Indra's simulators expedite mission preparation, provide a realistic training environment, and reduce operational costs by conserving the use of actual vehicles for high-level exercises and real operations.

Indra offers a range of mission simulation systems catering to soldiers with varying profiles. The company has delivered full simulation systems for the Leopard 2E tanks, currently used for training Ukrainian troops, and fifty Víctrix simulators that allow soldiers to train with their own weapons. Indra's portfolio also includes simulators for various types of fighter jets, planes, helicopters, and advanced air traffic control systems (JTAC).
