Leonardo supported by Italy joins European tank project MGCS

In a major development in the defense sector, particularly in the MGCS project, Leonardo has allied with KNDS (KMW+NEXTER Defense Systems). Supported by the Italian Ministry of Defense, this alliance marks a significant step towards creating a true European defense group, with a special focus on closer cooperation in the field of land-based defense electronics.

The main goal of this partnership is to enable the implementation of cooperative programs between European nations. This will strengthen their national industrial bases and lead to the development of the next generation of armored vehicle platforms. The Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) is a central project, representing the future of European land defense capabilities.

Launched in 2017 by Germany and France, the MGCS aims to replace the current main battle tanks Leopard 2 and Leclerc. It will not be a single armored combat vehicle but a series of systems designed around this vehicle. Developed and manufactured by KNDS and Rheinmetall (which joined the project in 2019), the first production unit is expected in 2035. The MGCS project may include unmanned and manned vehicles in various weight classes, as well as associated weaponry.

Leonardo's initiative aligns with the Italian Ministry of Defense's strategy, as detailed in the Documento Programmatico Difesa 2023-2025. It also complements the action plan from the recent agreement signed by the Italian and German governments.

Furthermore, Leonardo and KNDS have agreed to work together on the Main Battle Tank (MBT) procurement program, centered around the powerful and advanced LEOPARD 2 A8. The collaboration will cover the development, manufacturing, and maintenance of the LEOPARD 2 A8 solution for the Italian Army, as well as associated support platforms.

This alliance is not just about immediate project implementation; it's a long-term strategic movement. It aims to establish new production and development capabilities in Italy for future European and export projects. This marks a key step in enhancing Italy's defense industry and its contribution to European defense collaboration.

The Italian Ministry of Defense is currently focusing on two major programs to modernize its Land Forces: the procurement of the LEOPARD MBT and its support vehicles, and the acquisition of new Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV) under the AICS program, in addition to combat support systems. These programs represent a significant overhaul of the Italian land forces, ensuring they are equipped with the latest technology and machinery.

This alliance reflects a broader trend in European defense, where countries are increasingly collaborating on shared defense initiatives. Driven by the need for interoperability, cost-efficiency, and a more unified European defense industry, this announcement could rejuvenate the somewhat flagging MGCS project.
