Start of Mass Production for 152mm Self-Propelled Howitzer 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV

The mass production of the advanced Russian self-propelled artillery system, the 152mm howitzer 2S35 "Koalitsiya-SV," has begun even before the completion of its national testing. This announcement was made by Vladimir Artyakov, 10 August 2023, the Deputy Director General of the state-owned company "Rostec."

While the official national testing for the "Koalitsiya-SV" self-propelled howitzer is not yet complete, both the howitzer and the associated transport and loading vehicle are already being manufactured in series. Artyakov did not provide further details, making it difficult to determine the precise timeline for the deployment of this cutting-edge artillery system in the armed forces. Earlier reports suggested that the "Koalitsiya-SV" would complete its national testing by the end of the year, which would then trigger mass production, followed by subsequent deliveries to the military.

Apparently, the course of the conflict in Ukraine has prompted Russia to accelerate the development and production of the 2S35 in order to bring it to the battlefield as quickly as possible. "Mass production is already underway, as well as the production of the transport and loading vehicle," a representative of Rostec stated, according to information from RIA Novosti.

The 2S35 is equipped with a 152mm cannon, capable of firing a variety of ammunition. This artillery piece can inflict significant damage on a wide range of targets, whether it's distant enemy forces or fortified installations. This striking capability is complemented by a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, the Kord, providing effective close defense against ground and aerial threats.

The 2S35 features an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection system that shields the crew members from environmental threats. Additionally, the addition of armor provides protection against small arms fire and shell splinters. With a three-person crew on board, the emphasis on safety allows the crew to focus on their mission without being constantly preoccupied with risks.

Night vision systems enable 24/7 operations, while the new automatic sighting system enhances the accuracy of shots, thereby increasing the chances of success. The control screens for the sights and firing procedures allow the crew to monitor and adjust shooting parameters effectively, all while remaining protected inside the vehicle.

Weighing 55,000 kg, the 2S35 is capable of moving at an impressive speed of 60 km/h. A range of 500 km allows it to engage in large-scale operations without worrying about fuel shortages. These mobility features make the 2S35 a valuable asset for fast and dynamic field operations, all based on a T-90 chassis.

We shouldn't have to wait long to see the 2S35 on the Ukrainian battlefields, as Rostec's leaders have already announced its future deployment. At that point, we will likely learn more about the capabilities and effectiveness of this new vehicle.
