During the "Army-2023" event, Russia unveiled an upgraded version of the BTR-82A armored personnel carrier (APC), referred to by some sources as the BTR-82A "U". This updated model aims to provide enhanced ballistic and anti-mine protection, catering to the needs of general-purpose units in the Ground Forces, Marine Infantry units, and specialized units engaged in tasks such as personnel transportation, engagement of similar enemy assets, countering airborne and surface targets, and ensuring the safety of onboard combat crews.

The APC features an 8x8 amphibious configuration, designed to offer adaptability across various terrains and water bodies. With a total combat weight of 20 tons, the APC can accommodate a combat crew of up to 10 personnel. Its dimensions are 7,560mm in length, 2,985mm in width, and 3,020mm in height. The APC has a ground clearance of 475mm and can reach a maximum road speed of 80 km/h.
In terms of armament, the BTR-82A "U" is equipped with a 30mm 2А72 automatic cannon, capable of firing at a rate of up to 330 rounds per minute and engaging targets effectively at a range of 3,600 meters. The APC also features a coaxial PKTM 7.62mm machine gun, paired with the main cannon to provide versatility in combat scenarios. Additionally, a combined dual-channel day-night optical sight equipped with thermal imaging and a laser rangefinder enhances the APC's targeting capabilities.
The BTR-82A "U" emphasizes both protection and mobility. It is powered by a diesel engine generating 330 horsepower, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. A mechanical two-stage transfer case and an independent torsion bar suspension system contribute to the APC's agility and adaptability. The vehicle is designed with ballistic protection capable of withstanding B-32 caliber 12.7x108mm projectiles. Moreover, it integrates mine protection, designed to withstand up to 2 kg of TNT beneath its habitable compartment.
The design of the BTR-82A "U" draws inspiration from various domestic armored personnel carriers, potentially incorporating elements from the "Boomerang" platform. The APC is reported to have integrated successful attributes from prior domestic armored vehicles, reflecting a design approach informed by previous iterations. Notably, the armor has been reinforced, particularly at the front, sides, and rear, to enhance its resilience against enemy fire. The APC's anti-mine protection is another notable feature, underscoring its ability to withstand mine-related threats.
Mobility remains a central aspect of the BTR-82A "U"'s design. It demonstrates impressive mobility characteristics, performing adeptly on both highways and rough terrains. An alteration in design involves relocating the engine to the front of the vehicle, potentially impacting weight distribution and balance to enhance handling.
For troop deployment, the BTR-82A "U" features a troop compartment designed to optimize efficiency. Rear hatches within this compartment facilitate the loading and unloading of motorized infantry, streamlining troop deployment during tactical operations.
Developed by VPK, located in Nizhny Novgorod, the vehicle's specific origin underscores the localized design and production. Finally, its compatibility with the K-17 Boomerang platform suggests a focus on standardization and interoperability with other vehicles sharing the same platform, aligning with modern approaches to military equipment development.
