Lithuania officially announced the drone purchase in a statement on the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense's X account. Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė confirmed both the drone purchase and the financial support for rehabilitation initiatives. Additionally, Lithuania has pledged EUR 35 million to support a Czech initiative to acquire artillery ammunition.

Lithuania's additional support includes EUR 5 million dedicated to education and EUR 12 million to assist veterans and to rebuild educational establishments and bomb shelters.

The purchase of drones is particularly significant in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, as drones are highly valued for their role in curbing Russian advances. With the arrival of spring and the mobilization of new Russian troops, many fear a significant Russian offensive in the coming weeks. Thus, the Lithuanian drones are timely for aiding Ukrainian forces in slowing potential Russian advances.

Normally, drones are also quite useful for the Ukrainian armed forces. Drones provide real-time intelligence on the battlefield, enabling Ukrainian forces to effectively monitor enemy movements and positions. This capability is crucial for planning strategic operations and conducting precise strikes while minimizing risks to civilian areas and infrastructure.

The use of drones democratizes access to aerial surveillance and strike capabilities, traditionally the domain of well-equipped armies with advanced air forces. This is particularly important for Ukraine, facing a conventionally stronger opponent like Russia.

Drones have allowed Ukraine to implement innovative tactics such as targeting supply lines, command centers, and other critical assets deep behind enemy lines. Notably, drone strikes on the Crimean port of Sevastopol and other key locations have disrupted Russian naval capabilities and logistics.

As Russia also extensively uses drones, including for attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure, enhancing Ukraine's drone capabilities is crucial for both offensive actions and bolstering their defenses against similar threats.

Drones represent a cost-effective way to extend military capabilities and exert force without the risks and expenses of manned operations. This aspect is vital as Ukraine seeks to maximize its resources in a prolonged conflict.

Ukraine has also expressed gratitude to Lithuania for its support in Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations and for Lithuania's leadership in enforcing sanctions and blocking the export of Russian and Belarusian agricultural products to the EU during a high-level meeting. This meeting highlighted the significant bilateral cooperation between the two nations as they work to support Ukraine's recovery and integration.
