Description
The Guarani is the new armoured vehicle personnel carrier ordered by the Brazilian army. The Guarani was designed by the company Italian Company Iveco Defence Vehicles. The Guarani was presented for the first time at the Defence Exhibition LAAD in April 2011. After being displayed at LAAD, the prototype will go the Brazilian Army's proving ground in Marambaia for a period of testing. At the same time, Iveco Defence Vehicles will begin construction of a pilot batch of 16 vehicles. In December 2007 a contract was signed between IVECO L.A. and the Brazilian MOD to co-develop a project which has been called Wheeled Medium Armoured Personnel Carrier– Basic Platform (VBTP-MR). The project will be supported by IVECO Defence Vehicles, situated in Northern Italy, which is dedicated to designing and manufacturing vehicles for military applications. On November 2009, the Brazilian Defence Minister, Nelson Jobim, announced that President Lula had authorized the start of production for 2044 new vehicles with the new name Guarani. In December 2009, Brazil signed a EUR 2.5 billion deal with Italy’s Iveco that aims to renew its wheeled armored personnel carrier fleet. The first prototype was delivered to the army in April 2010 and will be followed by another 16 vehicles by the end of 2011. Series production is scheduled to begin deliveries next year with production expected to continue until at least 2030 to meet the army's full requirement. In 2009, Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim announced that President Lula had authorized the start of production for 2044 new vehicles with the new name GUARANI, formerly known as Urutu III. According to his words, "the president authorized the start of the project Guarani, which will replace the entire system of mobility of the Army. " According to the minister, will be invested in construction for the Guarani Fiat Iveco $ 6 billion over 20 years. Remained firm prediction that the first would be ready in 2010 and 16 vehicles were tested by 2011. From 2012 to begin making the production units. In December 2012, The Italian Defence Company IVECO has delivered the first batch of VBTP-MR Guarani 6x6 armoured vehicle to the Brazilian army. This delivery is the first of the contract of $246 million signed by IVECO Defence Vehicles and the Department of Science and Technology of the Brazilian army to manufacture 86 units of the Guarani for 2014. In March 2014, The Brazilian Army has delivered the first batch of Guarani Armored Personnel Transport Vehicles to a mechanized infantry unit in Western Parana state.
 
Variants
Variants of the Guarani are expected to include ambulance, C2, command post, fire direction, maintenance, mortar carrier and repair/recovery.

Armament
The Guarani can be fitted with a variety of remote-controlled weapon stations. It might be fitted with remotely controlled 7.62-mm, 12.7-mm machine guns or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher. One of the variant order by the Brazilian Army will be equipped with an UT30 turet, armed with a 30mm gun and 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun. This remote controlled weapon station is being delivered by Elbit's Brazilian subsidiary, AEL Sistemas, which received a $260 million framework contract to supply ‘a few hundred' UT30 turrets for the project.
Design and Protection
The Guarani is fitted with an armour protection, which gives protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle can be fitted with add-on composite armor for improved protection. This armored personnel carrier has a V-shaped hull, which provides protection against landmines. Interior is fitted with a spall liner.
Propulsion
The Guarani is motorised with a PFT diesel engine 383hp coupled to a ZF fully automatic transmission, which will give a maximum road speed of 100km/h and an maximum range of about 600km.
Accessories
The Guarani is airportable by C-130 Hercules and fully amphibious. Modular side floats can be added for improved floatation. The Guarani is fully amphibious, two waterjets are mounted at the rear of the hull. There is two rectangular roof hatches on the top of the crew compartment that open to each side of the hull. The infantrymen enter and leave the Guarani by a hydraulic ramp in the rear of the hull that opens downwards.
