The YFQ-48A Talon Blue is a U.S.-developed, single-engine, uncrewed combat aircraft prototype designed as an autonomous or semi-autonomous wingman for crewed combat aircraft. Developed through Northrop Grumman's company-funded Project Talon portfolio with substantial involvement from subsidiary Scaled Composites, the aircraft emphasizes modularity, affordability, rapid manufacturing and mission adaptability. The U.S. Air Force formally assigned the YFQ-48A Mission Design Series designation to Project Talon in December 2025, recognizing it as a strong contender within the wider Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program.

Description

The YFQ-48A originated from lessons Northrop Grumman learned during the first phase of the U.S. Air Force Collaborative Combat Aircraft competition. Northrop Grumman was not selected to build one of the two CCA Increment 1 production-representative prototypes, which were awarded to General Atomics and Anduril, and subsequently reworked its concept with an increased emphasis on affordability, manufacturing speed and mission versatility. Developed jointly with Northrop Grumman subsidiary Scaled Composites, the aircraft was initially known internally as Project Lotus before becoming Project Talon. The program progressed from authorization to the aircraft standing on its own landing gear in approximately 15 months. Compared with Northrop Grumman's preceding CCA proposal, the redesigned aircraft was reported to be approximately 1,000 lb (454 kg) lighter, incorporate around 50% fewer parts and require roughly 30% less construction time.

Northrop Grumman publicly unveiled Project Talon at Mojave, California, on December 3, 2025. On December 22, the U.S. Air Force formally designated the semi-autonomous prototype YFQ-48A, describing it as a strong contender in the CCA program and emphasizing the service's strategy of maintaining continuous competition and additional opportunities for industry participation. Northrop Grumman subsequently adopted the name Talon Blue. The prototype is registered with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration as Scaled Composites Model M444, serial number 001, registration N444LX, and is identified by the FAA as a single-engine turbofan fixed-wing aircraft. Pratt & Whitney announced in April 2026 that the aircraft's PW500-family propulsion system had been integrated and was ready for flight testing.

Talon Blue continued ground testing during 2026. Crane Aerospace & Electronics confirmed that the aircraft conducted a successful taxi test at Mojave, California, on May 14, 2026, supported by the company's Brake Control System. As of August 13, 2026, no first flight of the YFQ-48A has been publicly confirmed by Northrop Grumman or the U.S. Air Force. Meanwhile, the Air Force's Increment 1 program has moved forward separately: on June 17, 2026, the service awarded engineering-and-manufacturing-development and production contracts to General Atomics for the FQ-42 and Anduril for the FQ-44. Northrop Grumman was instead included among six companies selected for the CCA mission-autonomy software contract pool. Talon Blue should therefore be regarded as a company-funded, Air Force-designated CCA-aligned prototype and future competitive candidate, rather than an Increment 1 production aircraft.

Operationally, the YFQ-48A is intended to complement crewed combat aircraft through human-machine teaming, adding affordable combat mass while extending the reach, flexibility and survivability of a force package in contested airspace. Northrop Grumman describes Talon Blue as capable of supporting crewed fighters while providing intelligent and timely target engagement and operational flexibility during high-risk missions. Its modular design and Project Talon development approach are intended to permit rapid adaptation to changing mission requirements. Potential roles are therefore expected to encompass collaborative combat operations, target engagement and other mission sets enabled by interchangeable payloads and mission-autonomy software, although the specific operational configurations, sensors, weapons and payload capacities of the YFQ-48A remain undisclosed.

YFQ-48A variants:

  • YFQ-48A Talon Blue: is the only publicly identified air-vehicle variant and represents the semi-autonomous prototype developed under Northrop Grumman's Project Talon portfolio.
  • Project Talon: previously known internally as Project Lotus, is the development program associated with the YFQ-48A rather than a separate aircraft variant.
  • Talon IQ: is not a YFQ-48A variant; it is Northrop Grumman's separate autonomous testbed ecosystem using the Scaled Composites Model 437 to develop and flight-test mission-autonomy technologies relevant to future autonomous combat aircraft.

Technical Data

  • Design

    The YFQ-48A is a single-engine, fixed-wing uncrewed combat aircraft designed around low weight, reduced manufacturing complexity and modular construction. Its external configuration consists of a long, slender forward fuselage, swept wings, two strongly outward-canted tail surfaces, a dorsal engine intake and a centrally positioned rear exhaust. The overall configuration and careful shaping are consistent with reducing radar signature, although Northrop Grumman has not published radar-cross-section data or detailed the aircraft's low-observable characteristics. The company emphasizes modular manufacturing, reduced part count and weight, and faster production compared with its preceding CCA concept. FAA records identify the prototype as Scaled Composites M444, serial 001, N444LX. Exact length, wingspan, height, empty weight and maximum takeoff weight remain undisclosed.

  • Engine

    The YFQ-48A is powered by one Pratt & Whitney PW500-family turbofan. Pratt & Whitney adapted an existing production commercial-engine design to the specific operating requirements of the CCA mission and conducted an extensive test program simulating flight and operational conditions applicable to Talon Blue. RTX reported favorable results relating to thrust, range and operability and confirmed on April 17, 2026, that the engine had been integrated into the aircraft and was ready to support flight testing. The underlying PW500 family has extensive commercial service experience, allowing the program to exploit mature propulsion technology to reduce development risk, cost and schedule. The exact PW500 variant installed in Talon Blue and its installed thrust rating have not been publicly disclosed.

  • Armament

    The YFQ-48A is intended for combat missions and Northrop Grumman specifically identifies intelligent and timely target engagement among the capabilities envisaged for Talon Blue. However, no specific weapon configuration has been publicly disclosed. There is currently no official confirmation of a particular air-to-air missile, air-to-surface weapon, guided bomb, internal weapons-bay configuration, external hardpoint arrangement or maximum weapons payload for the aircraft. Weapons demonstrated on other CCA prototypes, including AIM-120 integration and live-fire testing conducted by the YFQ-44A, should therefore not be attributed to the YFQ-48A without separate confirmation.

  • Avionics and Onboard Equipment

    The YFQ-48A Talon Blue's operational avionics suite remains classified or commercially sensitive. Confirmed capabilities include autonomous flight and ground-operation functions, while Northrop Grumman's broader autonomy architecture is being developed through its Talon IQ ecosystem. Talon IQ uses the Scaled Composites Model 437 as a flying testbed and incorporates Northrop Grumman's Prism mission-autonomy software, which is designed to support open integration and government reference architecture requirements; the testbed has also demonstrated integration of third-party autonomy software such as Shield AI's Hivemind. These systems demonstrate the technological approach supporting Northrop Grumman's autonomous-aircraft portfolio but should not all be interpreted as confirmed YFQ-48A equipment. One specifically identified Talon Blue subsystem is a Crane Aerospace & Electronics Brake Control System (BCS) using a modular Standard Systems Architecture and anti-skid braking functionality. The aircraft's radar, electro-optical/infrared sensors, electronic-warfare suite, tactical datalinks, communications equipment, defensive-aids suite and exact navigation fit have not been publicly disclosed.
