U.S. MH-60 Helicopter Fires Hellfire Missiles to Disable Third Cargo Ship Breaking Iran Naval Blockade.


A U.S. MH-60 helicopter struck the Panama-flagged cargo ship Vela Nova with two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles in the Gulf of Oman on August 11, 2026, reportedly disabling its steering after the crew allegedly ignored repeated U.S. warnings and continued toward an Iranian port. The US CENTCOM (Central Command) announced the engagement on August 11, 2026, and stated that Vela Nova stopped sailing toward Iran after the helicopter fired toward the ship’s engine-room area. The incident is operationally significant because it suggests that blockade enforcement has expanded from surveillance, warnings, and boarding operations to include direct airborne precision strikes when vessels refuse to comply.

The MH-60 family is central to U.S. Navy maritime operations, although CENTCOM did not publicly identify the exact variant used against Vela Nova. The MH-60R Seahawk is the Navy’s principal anti-submarine and surface-warfare helicopter, while the MH-60S performs missions including surface warfare, logistics, special operations support, and maritime security.

The MH-60R is particularly relevant to such maritime interdiction operations because U.S. Navy helicopters of this type have reportedly been deployed in similar missions. Army Recognition previously reported that an MH-60R Seahawk operating from USS Truxtun was being used to enforce the Iran blockade, extending the destroyer’s ability to identify, shadow, and intercept commercial vessels beyond the ship’s immediate position.

The MH-60R combines maritime-surveillance radar; electro-optical and infrared sensors; electronic-support measures; datalinks; dipping sonar; and sonobuoys. For a blockade mission, this sensor suite allows the helicopter to locate and classify merchant ships, maintain visual contact, and transmit information back to surface combatants while remaining capable of transitioning rapidly to an armed response.

For surface attack, both the MH-60R and MH-60S can employ AGM-114-series Hellfire missiles. The MH-60R can carry four-round Hellfire launchers, and Army Recognition documented an MH-60R from USS Rafael Peralta carrying four AGM-114-series Hellfires during operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area, demonstrating a weapon configuration relevant to the reported Vela Nova engagement.

Depending on its configuration, an MH-60 can carry up to two four-round Hellfire launchers, giving the helicopter a potential maximum load of eight missiles. That does not mean the aircraft involved in the Vela Nova strike carried eight weapons. CENTCOM confirmed only that two Hellfire missiles were fired, while the helicopter’s complete combat load has not been disclosed.

The AGM-114 can offer a more limited and precise means of engaging a commercial vessel than a larger dedicated anti-ship missile. Its precision may allow an aircrew to concentrate fire against machinery, propulsion, steering, or other critical areas rather than attempting to destroy the entire vessel.

This was reportedly not the first time U.S. forces had used Hellfire missiles to disable commercial shipping during the blockade. Army Recognition reported in June that U.S. forces used Hellfire missiles to stop an oil tanker accused of violating the Gulf of Oman blockade, indicating that precision strikes against propulsion-related areas had already become part of the enforcement model.

According to Army Recognition, a similar tactic was used on July 15, when U.S. forces disabled the tanker M/T Belma with Hellfire missiles near Iran’s Kharg Island. The report stated that the strike was intended to neutralize propulsion while avoiding damage to the tanker’s cargo tanks, reinforcing the concept of achieving a mobility kill rather than sinking the vessel.

A similar objective appears to have guided the reported action against *Vela Nova*. According to the available account, the helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles toward the engine-room area, after which the vessel’s steering was disabled, and it ceased proceeding toward Iran.

For blockade enforcement, this distinction is important. The objective is generally to stop or redirect a commercial vessel rather than destroy it, an outcome that could cause civilian casualties or environmental damage or create a navigation hazard in heavily trafficked waters.

An MH-60 can therefore perform several functions during the same mission. It can locate a suspect ship, conduct visual identification, shadow the vessel, support radio warnings, and then escalate to precision fire if the crew refuses orders.

That capability is especially valuable in the Gulf of Oman, where U.S. forces must monitor broad maritime areas and intercept vessels before they approach Iranian coastal waters or the Strait of Hormuz. A helicopter can reach suspicious commercial traffic significantly faster than its parent destroyer and maintain pressure without requiring the warship to maneuver directly alongside every target.

The Vela Nova strike also fits into a broader pattern of U.S. escalation against ships accused of defying the blockade. Army Recognition reported on the U.S. Navy’s boarding and disabling of the M/T Lavine after repeated alleged Iran blockade violations, highlighting what appears to be a graduated enforcement model ranging from warning and diversion to boarding and physical disabling action.

The U.S. CENTCOM said that, as of August 11, 2026, U.S. forces had diverted 55 commercial vessels attempting to breach the blockade, disabled three non-compliant ships, and boarded two others. If accurate, these figures suggest that diversion remains the preferred method, while direct kinetic action is being reserved for vessels that continue toward Iran after repeated warnings.

The maritime pressure campaign has also expanded considerably in scale. Army Recognition reported earlier in 2026 that U.S. forces were blocking dozens of Iranian-linked oil tankers as part of a major maritime pressure operation, illustrating the economic and strategic dimension of the blockade beyond individual interdictions.

For U.S. commanders, the MH-60 and Hellfire combination provides an intermediate option between boarding operations and the use of heavier naval firepower. An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer may need to preserve its missile inventory and other weapons for higher-end threats such as hostile aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and enemy surface combatants.

Using an embarked MH-60 against a merchant vessel allows a destroyer to remain at greater distance while still projecting precision firepower. It also extends the effective enforcement radius of the naval force, making it harder for non-compliant ships to exploit gaps between patrolling surface combatants.

The enforcement approach may also depend substantially on deterrence. If shipowners and captains understand that continuing toward an Iranian port despite repeated warnings could result in interception by an armed MH-60 and a precision strike against steering or propulsion systems, more vessels may comply before force becomes necessary.

That deterrent effect could ultimately matter more than the number of ships actually struck. Every successful diversion reduces the requirement for boarding teams and kinetic engagements while reinforcing CENTCOM’s ability to influence commercial movement around Iranian ports.

The Vela Nova engagement therefore illustrates the operational value of combining the MH-60’s speed and maritime sensors with the precision of the Hellfire missile. According to CENTCOM, two missiles were sufficient to halt the vessel’s movement. Depending on its configuration, an MH-60 may carry additional Hellfire missiles for other surface-warfare missions.

The reported attack also appears to reinforce a broader trend previously documented by Army Recognition: U.S. naval forces are increasingly using helicopter-delivered Hellfire strikes as a scalable maritime enforcement tool. The combination of airborne surveillance, rapid interception, and precision disabling fire gives U.S. CENTCOM a means of stopping vessels without immediately committing a destroyer to a close-range confrontation or using substantially heavier anti-ship weapons.

Operationally, the implications are significant. A ship attempting to reach Iran can potentially be detected, tracked, warned, and physically stopped by an armed U.S. naval helicopter before reaching its destination, extending the effective reach of maritime enforcement beyond the immediate position of U.S. surface combatants.
