The image is particularly significant because the helicopter is visibly carrying four AGM-114-series Hellfire missiles on a four-rail launcher beneath its stub wing, highlighting an organic airborne precision-strike capability available to the destroyer. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command imagery published through the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) on August 7 states that Rafael Peralta is deployed to support maritime security and stability in the Middle East. While the official caption does not identify the weapons, the photograph clearly shows the four-missile configuration; the exact Hellfire variant, however, cannot be reliably determined from the external imagery alone.
An Armed Surface-Warfare Configuration
The MH-60R is the U.S. Navy's principal shipborne anti-submarine and surface-warfare helicopter, but the configuration visible aboard Rafael Peralta emphasizes the aircraft's increasingly important role as an armed surface-combat platform. The Navy officially lists surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, electromagnetic warfare, command and control, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance among the MH-60R's missions, while AGM-114 Hellfire missiles are approved for employment from the MH-60R/S family. Navy documentation also describes an MH-60R aviation configuration using two MK 299 MOD 2 launchers capable of carrying eight Hellfires, confirming that four-round launchers form part of the aircraft's established surface-warfare weapons architecture. In the Rafael Peralta photograph, four missiles are fitted to one visible launcher. Importantly, although the rounds can be identified as belonging to the Hellfire family, external features in this image do not provide sufficient evidence to establish whether they are AGM-114B, K, M, N or another compatible subvariant.
The tactical value of such a loadout extends beyond simply adding four missiles to the helicopter. An armed MH-60R combines mobility, maritime sensors and precision weapons aboard a single platform that can operate well away from its parent destroyer, investigate surface contacts and, when authorized, transition from surveillance to engagement. Four available missiles potentially provide the crew with the ability to conduct more than one precision engagement during a sortie or retain weapons following an initial attack, increasing persistence compared with a single-shot configuration. This can be particularly valuable against fast, dispersed or maneuvering surface threats: the helicopter can approach from a geometry independent of the destroyer's course, maintain separation between the threat and the ship, and place precision firepower closer to the contact without requiring the destroyer itself to close the distance. Extending the Destroyer’s Sensor-to-Shooter Reach
The deeper operational advantage is the expansion of the destroyer's sensor-to-shooter envelope. USS Rafael Peralta already possesses powerful shipborne sensors and weapons, but an MH-60R allows the combat system to extend beyond the physical position of the ship. The helicopter can move toward contacts beyond the destroyer's immediate visual horizon, contribute to identification and tracking, and provide an airborne firing platform if an engagement becomes necessary. In effect, the MH-60R becomes a mobile extension of the destroyer's surface-warfare architecture rather than merely a helicopter carried aboard it. This is especially relevant with HSM-51: the U.S. Navy describes the “Warlords” as its only forward-deployed MH-60R expeditionary squadron, tasked with providing combat-ready armed anti-surface and anti-submarine detachments to ships deploying in the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf regions.
That combination takes on additional importance in the Middle East, where naval forces routinely operate around narrow waterways, dense commercial shipping and strategically critical chokepoints. The U.S. Navy has previously demonstrated Hellfire-armed MH-60R operations in the Bab el-Mandeb, where officials specifically emphasized the value of giving crews different precision-weapon options in a dangerous and constrained maritime environment. A helicopter equipped with four Hellfires gives a surface commander another means of responding to suitable threats without immediately relying on the destroyer's heavier ship-launched weapons. The operational logic is one of layered response: crew-served weapons, aviation-delivered precision munitions and larger shipboard systems each provide different levels of reach and effect. In crowded littoral waters, the ability to place an armed aircraft ahead of the ship can increase tactical flexibility while keeping the destroyer itself at greater standoff from a potentially hostile contact.
Strategic Implications for U.S. Naval Operations in the Middle East
Strategically, the configuration illustrates a broader principle of distributed naval lethality. An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer carrying an armed MH-60R does not concentrate all of its offensive potential within the hull or its missile cells; part of that combat power can move independently through the battlespace. For suitable surface targets, aviation-delivered Hellfire missiles could also provide commanders with an alternative to employing larger and strategically valuable ship-launched munitions, helping preserve higher-end weapons for threats that demand them. More importantly, an adversary confronting Rafael Peralta must account not only for the destroyer's location but also for a mobile armed aircraft capable of operating away from it. That complicates surveillance, targeting and threat calculations because the position of the ship no longer defines the only point from which precision maritime firepower can be delivered. The effect is not simply greater range, but a wider and more flexible engagement architecture surrounding the destroyer.
The imagery released by DVIDS should not be interpreted as evidence that the HSM-51 helicopter was conducting a combat mission or responding to a specific threat; the Navy made no such claim. What the photograph does demonstrate is the combat capability immediately available to USS Rafael Peralta during its Middle East deployment: an MH-60R carrying four Hellfire-family precision-guided missiles and capable of extending the destroyer's surface-warfare reach beyond the ship itself. The exact AGM-114 subtype remains visually unconfirmed, but the broader significance of the configuration is clear. In the constrained and strategically sensitive waters of the U.S. 5th Fleet, a Hellfire-armed MH-60R gives a single destroyer a mobile sensor-and-shooter layer, additional options against suitable surface threats and greater freedom to project precision firepower away from the hull. The significance is therefore not simply that the Sea Hawk carries Hellfires, it is that the helicopter moves part of the destroyer's lethal reach beyond the horizon.
