Türkiye’s AKINCI Combat Drone Set to Gain Long-Range Strike Reach with EDGE’s AL TARIQ Precision-Guided Munition.


Türkiye’s Bayraktar AKINCI combat drone is set to gain a longer-range precision strike capability through the integration of EDGE’s AL TARIQ guided munition family, expanding the UCAV’s ability to conduct standoff attacks against high-value targets in contested environments. Announced by EDGE on 8 May 2026 during SAHA 2026 in Istanbul, the agreement with Baykar strengthens the growing Türkiye-UAE defense partnership while positioning AKINCI as a more capable unmanned strike platform for export markets.

The integration of AL TARIQ, including the 120 km-range AL TARIQ-LR variant, could allow AKINCI to strike radar sites, logistics hubs, command posts, and hardened positions from beyond frontline air defense coverage while maintaining persistent ISR coverage at high altitude. The agreement also reflects a broader shift in the global drone market toward complete combat ecosystems that combine UAVs, precision weapons, mission systems, and export-ready support packages rather than standalone airframes.

EDGE announced on 8 May 2026, that it had signed two agreements with Baykar at SAHA 2026 in Istanbul, Türkiye, to deepen their strategic partnership around unmanned strike capabilities. The agreements focus on integrating the AL TARIQ line of precision-guided munitions onto the Bayraktar AKINCI unmanned combat aerial vehicle, while also creating a broader commercial framework for joint market access. The move is relevant because it links a combat-proven Turkish HALE UCAV with a modular UAE-made air-to-surface weapon family designed for day/night, all-weather precision missions. According to EDGE, the partnership is intended to provide Baykar’s UAV customers with a broader portfolio of smart weapons and to bring integrated solutions to global defense markets.

The first agreement covers Baykar’s support to EDGE for the integration and demonstration of AL TARIQ precision-guided munitions on the Bayraktar AKINCI, a multirole high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned combat aerial vehicle. This is more than a standard payload integration effort: it reflects a shift toward packaged, export-ready strike ecosystems in which airframes, weapons, mission software, training, and commercial access are increasingly offered as combined capabilities. EDGE described the contract as part of a broader effort to give Baykar’s UAV customers access to a wider portfolio of smart weapons, while Baykar framed the move as another step in expanding the ammunition options available to AKINCI operators.

This cooperation also reflects the growing defense-industrial convergence between Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates, two countries that have increasingly positioned themselves as autonomous suppliers of export-oriented defense technologies. Türkiye brings a mature UAV ecosystem built around platforms such as the TB2, AKINCI, and Kızılelma, while the UAE is expanding its role as a developer of precision weapons, guided munitions, loitering systems, and integrated defense solutions through EDGE. The AKINCI-AL TARIQ integration therefore represents not only a technical pairing, but also a sign of how non-Western defense groups are creating alternative supply chains for countries seeking access to modern strike capabilities without relying exclusively on US or European systems.



The choice of AKINCI is significant because the platform occupies a higher-capacity segment than tactical UAVs such as the TB2. According to Baykar’s official data, AKINCI has a 1,500 kg payload capacity, a 6,000 kg maximum take-off weight, an operational altitude of 30,000 ft, a service ceiling of 40,000 ft, line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight communications, and twin turboprop engine options. Baykar also presents the aircraft as a platform for ISTAR missions, precision air-to-ground strikes, air-to-air missions, and maritime security operations, including surface warfare and coastal patrol. These characteristics make AKINCI a suitable carrier for heavier and longer-range munitions than those normally associated with smaller armed drones.

For EDGE, the agreement creates a direct path to place AL TARIQ within a growing international UCAV user base. The AL TARIQ family is designed as a modular kit system that converts conventional MK-81, MK-82, and MK-83 aerial bombs into precision-guided air-to-surface weapons. EDGE states that the system can use GNSS, INS, imaging infrared, and semi-active laser guidance, while also offering automatic target recognition, off-axis engagement capability, adjustable attack profiles, height-of-burst sensor options, penetration warheads, and wireless programming. The AL TARIQ-S variant is described as a kit for MK-81 and MK-82 munitions with a range of up to 40 km, while the AL TARIQ-LR uses wing kits to extend range up to 120 km.

The integration of AL TARIQ could give AKINCI operators a different strike profile from the smaller guided munitions already associated with UAV operations. Instead of being limited to close-range battlefield engagement, AKINCI equipped with AL TARIQ-LR would be able to conduct standoff attacks against command posts, air defense support assets, logistics nodes, ammunition depots, radar sites, and hardened targets from greater distance. This would place the UCAV closer to the role traditionally assigned to manned strike aircraft, particularly in theaters where airspace is contested but where operators still require persistent surveillance and precision engagement from a remotely piloted platform. EDGE states that AL TARIQ weapons can be launched from altitudes up to 40,000 ft and at speeds up to Mach 0.9, with lock-on-before-launch and lock-on-after-launch modes, giving the weapon family a mission set adapted to high-altitude release profiles.

The second agreement is equally important from an industrial and commercial perspective. EDGE and Baykar established a framework allowing both companies to market and offer products from each other’s portfolios as part of their respective customer propositions. This creates the basis for cross-selling between the UAE and Turkish defense industrial ecosystems and could help both groups present integrated solutions rather than isolated products. For international customers, this may reduce procurement complexity by linking air vehicle, weapon integration, support services, and export-oriented commercial channels under a coordinated offer. From a market perspective, the agreement may be particularly relevant for countries already operating Baykar UAVs or considering AKINCI as a strategic strike platform. By adding an EDGE weapon family to the aircraft’s potential payload options, Baykar can offer a broader and more flexible weapons catalogue, while EDGE gains access to a UAV customer base that has expanded across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

The latest agreements also build on an earlier EDGE-Baykar arrangement to integrate the DESERT STING 16 guided-glide weapon onto the Bayraktar TB2. That earlier step focused on a lighter UAV and munition pairing, while the AKINCI-AL TARIQ effort moves the cooperation into a higher payload, longer-range strike category. This progression suggests that both companies are not limiting their relationship to a single munition or platform, but are gradually developing a broader family of compatible UAV-launched precision weapons. The integration process will nevertheless require more than mechanical compatibility between the aircraft and the munition. Demonstrating AL TARIQ on AKINCI would involve flight envelope validation, weapon separation trials, mission computer integration, targeting data exchange, guidance-mode compatibility, and operational certification. These steps are essential to ensure that the weapon can be employed safely and accurately across different altitude, speed, and mission profiles. This is why EDGE’s wording, referring to integration and demonstration support from Baykar, is important: it suggests a phased process intended to move the munition from contractual agreement to validated operational capability.

The EDGE-Baykar agreements signed at SAHA 2026 mark a clear expansion of cooperation between the UAE and Türkiye in the field of unmanned precision strike. By pairing the Bayraktar AKINCI’s payload capacity, endurance, and beyond-line-of-sight operating profile with the AL TARIQ family’s modular guidance, standoff range, and all-weather attack options, both companies are positioning themselves to offer customers a more complete unmanned combat solution. The strategic message is that future drone competition will not be decided by airframes alone, but by the strength of the weapons, sensors, software, integration support, and export ecosystems built around them. For Baykar, AL TARIQ adds another layer to AKINCI’s strike flexibility; for EDGE, the agreement places its guided munitions inside one of the most visible UAV ecosystems on the international market.
