Russian armed forces use suicide drone to strike Ukrainian army M777 howitzers position



According to a video published by the Russian Ministry of Defense on May 18, 2022, the Russian armed forces have used loitering munition, also called suicide drones, to conduct an attack against an artillery position of the Ukrainian army equipped with M777 155mm towed howitzers.

The Russian attack failed to destroy the Ukrainian army's M777 howitzer battery, but Ukrainian soldiers were forced to leave the position and take refuge in the nearest forest.

In recent months, Russia has also developed suicide drones like the United States or Israel. The Russian company ZALA Aero, a subdivision of Kalashnikov Group, has designed and developed the KUB, a loitering ammunition also called suicide drone. An export version is also available under the name of Kub-E.

The Kub loitering munition passed its state trials in November 2021 and in 2022, the first serial production of the Kub suicide drones was delivered to the Russian armed forces.

Citing information from the Russian defense industry, currently, the Kub has no equivalent on the world military market of similar size and weight. The size of the Kub is 1,210×950×165 mm. It can carry a payload of up to 3 kg.

The Kub loitering drones can be used to target enemy infrastructural facilities, manpower, as well as lightly armored targets. It is electrically powered and thus operated in silent mode. The drone can reach a speed of 130 km/h, with a maximum flight time of 30 minutes.
