Combining hypersonic speed with greater magazine depth and carrier-based deployment could expand the Navy’s conventional strike reach and strengthen its ability to threaten high-value targets in heavily defended environments.

On September 14, 2026, the U.S. Navy took a major step toward fielding a new generation of carrier-based hypersonic strike capability as Castelion announced a production delivery order valued at up to $200 million for its Blackbeard weapon. The award moves the system beyond Early Operational Capability prototypes and into production rounds intended for the fleet. Coming amid an accelerating U.S. effort to expand long-range conventional strike capacity, the decision underscores both Blackbeard’s strategic importance to naval aviation and Castelion’s emergence as a consequential player in America’s hypersonic industrial base, according to the company’s official announcement.

Awarded by Portfolio Acquisition Executive Aviation, PAE(A), through its Future Capability Development and Integration Aviation Rapid Capabilities Cell, the order covers the manufacture, assembly, testing and delivery of an initial lot of Blackbeard Hypersonic Weapons. The production rounds will follow the 50 Early Operational Capability weapons ordered by the Navy in June. That progression has been remarkably rapid: on June 16, Castelion disclosed a $23.4 million firm-fixed-price order for 50 Blackbeard EOC pre-production prototypes and associated storage and shipping containers. Just 90 days later, the September production announcement marked the transition to production rounds under a SBIR Phase III award. An intervening $89.997 million Navy award announced in August is supporting engineering, logistics and manufacturing work for the 50 EOC weapons and Blackbeard’s transition toward a Navy Program of Record.

At the center of the effort is Blackbeard, an air-launched hypersonic strike weapon designed to provide U.S. naval aviation with a responsive, long-range and high-speed attack option against both maritime and land targets. Its relevance to American sea power goes beyond velocity alone. For carrier aviation, greater weapon range can extend the distance at which naval forces are able to hold high-value targets at risk, while Castelion says Blackbeard is specifically intended to increase magazine depth and expand the lethal reach of naval aviation. The carrier-based dimension is already tangible: in April 2026, Castelion announced a separate $105 million Navy contract to continue integrating Blackbeard with the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, including system-safety certification, flight testing and activities associated with carrier operations, with Early Operational Capability targeted for 2027.

For the U.S. Navy, this combination of range, speed and potential inventory depth has strategic implications. Hypersonic strike is most consequential when it can become more than a scarce, exquisite capability reserved for a limited number of missions. Castelion is pursuing a different industrial proposition: designing Blackbeard from inception around manufacturability, commercial unit cost and continuous flight-test iteration. In practical strategic terms, that model seeks to give American commanders not simply access to a hypersonic weapon, but the prospect of having such weapons available in quantities relevant to sustained operations. That distinction is increasingly important as the United States places renewed emphasis on rebuilding conventional deterrence and strengthening the depth of its precision-strike inventories.

The acquisition mechanism behind the latest award is also noteworthy. The Navy formally established PAE(A) in May 2026 with a mandate centered on accelerating capability delivery across naval aviation. The Navy described the new portfolio acquisition structure as intended to inject greater urgency into the acquisition enterprise, while the organization’s rapid-capabilities elements are designed to move promising technologies toward operational use more quickly. Blackbeard’s progression through the Aviation Rapid Capabilities Cell provides a significant example of how the Navy’s evolving acquisition philosophy can combine commercial innovation, private capital and government demand to shorten the path from development toward fleet capability. Castelion CEO and co-founder Bryon Hargis said the production decision reflected Navy confidence in the program and highlighted the importance of removing unnecessary barriers and partnering closely with industry to deliver capability rapidly.

Castelion’s industrial strategy may ultimately prove as important as the weapon itself. The company has invested heavily in Project Ranger, its 1,000-acre manufacturing campus in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, where work on the latest Navy order will be performed alongside activities at Castelion’s Torrance, California facility. Blackbeard uses a vertically integrated production strategy and commercial manufacturing practices intended to increase control over cost, quality and schedule from raw material through completed weapon. The broader scale envisioned by Castelion is substantial: a production framework announced in May provides for a guaranteed minimum of 500 Blackbeard missiles annually once testing and validation are complete, with a pathway toward procurement of thousands more. This framework is separate from the September Navy production order, whose exact number of rounds has not been publicly disclosed, but it demonstrates the industrial scale around which the Blackbeard enterprise is being built.

Blackbeard could also have implications beyond the U.S. inventory. Castelion’s August Navy award includes work on Defense Exportability Features, intended to facilitate potential future availability to U.S. allies and partners. No foreign customer or export approval was identified in the announcement, but incorporating exportability considerations during maturation suggests that the program is being structured with potential allied interoperability and wider coalition demand in mind. Combined with Blackbeard’s movement toward a Navy Program of Record, the production order reinforces the impression of a weapon progressing from an innovative development effort toward a more institutionalized and scalable component of the American long-range strike portfolio.

The significance of the Navy’s latest Blackbeard order is larger than its headline value of up to $200 million. It represents a shift from demonstrating hypersonic technology toward producing operational weapons for the fleet, while highlighting a distinctly American model built around private investment, rapid iteration, vertical integration and industrial-scale manufacturing. For U.S. naval aviation, Blackbeard offers a pathway toward greater long-range striking power and deeper magazines aboard a carrier-centered force. For Castelion, the award is a powerful validation of a strategy that has treated production as a fundamental part of weapon design from the beginning. If that model continues to deliver, Blackbeard could become important not only for the speed at which it flies, but for the speed and scale at which the United States can place advanced hypersonic capability into the hands of its warfighters.
