The U.S. CENTCOM (Central Command) identified the vessels as M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, and M/T Derya near Kharg Island. According to a September 8 release from U.S. Central Command Public Affairs, American forces ordered the crews to abandon the tankers before striking them and rendering the vessels inoperable, demonstrating that repeated attacks against U.S. naval forces are now triggering systematic retaliation against Iran's oil-shipping network.

The September 8 operation follows the September 5, 2026, U.S. strikes on three Iranian crude-oil tankers, which CENTCOM carried out after Iranian ballistic missiles targeted a U.S. aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer. Those warships also avoided the attacks, with no reported American casualties. The latest action therefore raises to eight the number of Iranian crude-oil carriers CENTCOM says it has destroyed or disabled in response to IRGC ballistic-missile attacks against U.S. Navy warships since September 5, 2026, indicating that strikes against oil shipping are becoming a deliberate retaliatory mechanism rather than an isolated response to a single engagement.

The U.S. CENTCOM (Central Command) described the five vessels as part of a multibillion-dollar shadow oil network used to fund the IRGC and its regional affiliates, though the command did not disclose the aircraft, warships, or weapons used in the strikes. This approach changes the military cost imposed on Tehran because U.S. retaliation is no longer confined to missile launchers, radars, naval bases or other conventional military targets. Large oil tankers are expensive, commercially important assets that are difficult to conceal or rapidly relocate because their movements depend on known ports, shipping lanes and maritime infrastructure, giving U.S. intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets opportunities to track them over extended periods.

That vulnerability provides U.S. forces with another means of imposing costs without having to locate every mobile ballistic-missile launcher threatening American ships. Persistent airborne, naval, and space-based surveillance can monitor large tankers across wide maritime areas, while the vessels themselves possess little ability to resist a precision strike once targeted. U.S. CENTCOM explicitly stated after the September 8, 2026, operation that Iran had no means to defend the five tankers, reinforcing the asymmetry between Tehran's ability to threaten naval forces with long-range missiles and its limited capacity to protect economically valuable shipping once those vessels are identified.

The ballistic-missile attacks nevertheless underline the continuing threat to U.S. naval operations. Engaging a maneuvering warship at sea requires more than missile range, because Iranian forces must detect the vessel, maintain an accurate track, transmit targeting data, and update the firing solution rapidly enough for the missile to reach the predicted position of a ship capable of changing speed and course. CENTCOM has not identified the U.S. warship targeted in the two latest attacks, the ballistic missiles involved, or whether the ship survived through maneuver, electronic warfare, decoys, interceptor missiles, or a combination of defensive measures. The command's statement that the vessel successfully evaded the attacks therefore confirms the failed engagements but does not establish which part of Iran's reconnaissance-to-strike chain broke down.

Iran has meanwhile been increasing missile and maritime pressure around the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. Army Recognition reported on September 8 that Tehran had threatened new maritime controls while claiming ballistic-missile attacks against U.S. forces, adding ballistic missiles to a broader threat environment involving naval mines, fast attack craft and pressure on commercial shipping. Iran's Qassem Basir, one of the ballistic missiles Tehran has recently associated with attacks against U.S. warships, has a claimed range of at least 1,200 km and uses terminal electro-optical guidance. Iranian performance claims remain difficult to verify independently, and repeated failures to hit maneuvering American warships are operationally significant because an effective anti-ship ballistic missile depends as much on a resilient sensor and targeting network as on the missile itself.

For the U.S. Navy, the operational problem extends beyond surviving individual missile attacks. Sustained Iranian launches can force warships to maintain elevated air-and-missile-defense readiness, consume interceptors when kinetic defenses are required, complicate maneuver around strategically important waterways, and increase demands on airborne and space-based surveillance supporting the fleet. American forces are simultaneously sustaining broader maritime operations around Iran, with U.S. Air Force F-35A fighters confirmed conducting patrols connected with enforcement operations in regional waters. Army Recognition previously reported the F-35A patrol activity and diversion of commercial vessels during the Iran blockade, illustrating the combination of combat aircraft, naval forces, and persistent surveillance required to monitor shipping while protecting U.S. forces against Iranian retaliation.

Destroying five additional tankers substantially increases the economic dimension of the confrontation. Oil carriers are expensive and operationally important assets, and repeated losses can impose costs beyond the ships' value by increasing insurance risk, disrupting export logistics, and forcing Iran to devote additional resources to protecting or replacing vessels tied to sanctioned or covert oil movements. The emerging U.S. response therefore creates a deterrence equation different from conventional strike-for-strike escalation: Tehran can disperse missile launchers and smaller naval forces across a large coastal area, but its oil-export system ultimately depends on fixed terminals and large merchant vessels whose movements can be observed.

Linking Iranian ballistic-missile attacks to the destruction of those ships allows Washington to threaten an economically significant target set that is considerably harder for Iran to hide, but the strategy also carries substantial escalation risk. If tanker strikes continue following every attempted attack against U.S. naval forces, Iran could respond by increasing pressure on commercial shipping, expanding missile salvos, employing naval mines or attempting to disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Even without completely closing the waterway, repeated military incidents could raise the operational burden on U.S. and allied naval forces and increase the economic consequences for international shipping.

The September 8, 2026, strikes consequently mark a more consequential stage in the U.S.-Iran maritime confrontation than the loss of five individual tankers suggests. CENTCOM has now demonstrated twice within days that ballistic-missile attacks against U.S. Navy warships can produce direct strikes on Iranian oil shipping, effectively connecting the survivability of vessels Washington associates with IRGC financing to Tehran's decision to continue attacking American naval forces. That linkage broadens U.S. retaliation from purely military targets toward the economic infrastructure supporting Iranian military activity, increasing both the potential deterrent effect and the risk that the confrontation could expand across the Gulf's maritime and energy networks.
