U.S. Central Command confirmed the vehicle malfunctioned during a hydrographic survey mission and remained disabled for over 24 hours prior to Iranian recovery. On September 8, 2026, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the capture of a U.S.-operated Anduril Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, as CENTCOM said the vehicle had malfunctioned during a survey mission and remained disabled for more than 24 hours. The recovered Dive-LD was largely intact, with its roughly 5.8 m-long and 1.2 m-diameter cylindrical hull, nose cone, flood holes, short transparent forward mast, and X-form stern control surfaces still visible in pictures shared by Iran. U.S. Central Command said the 2.7- to 2.8-ton AUV carried neither classified sonar or radar nor sensitive collected data, while Anduril confirmed the lost vehicle had accumulated thousands of operating hours during months of CENTCOM missions.
U.S. Navy units were training with the Dive-LD since December 2024 and received the first announced vehicle in April 2025, placing the Iranian capture only 17 months after initial delivery. The loss occurred in a strait that handled 25% of global seaborne oil and 20% of LNG trade before the 2026 conflict, with traffic falling to single-digit daily transits during parts of August, partly due to mine threats. According to available information, the Dive-LD weighs 2,720 to 2,800 kg, measures roughly 5.8 m by 1.2 m, and combines a 6,000 m maximum depth with up to 10 days of endurance, speeds of 2 to 8 knots, and a range approaching 600 km, or 324 nautical miles. Its size puts it above man-portable mine-hunting UUVs but below extra-large vehicles such as the Ghost Shark, while its depth rating allows it to operate from shallow littorals to deep ocean.
Navigation incorporates the SPRINT-Nav X hybrid acoustic-inertial equipment and AvTrak 6 communications and positioning hardware because GPS cannot continuously support a submerged mission. Its Micro-Ranger 2 USBL can track up to 10 underwater targets at 995 m, with 10 hours of independent topside power, and Dive-LD navigation testing was conducted in water only 6 to 20 m deep. Additively manufactured exterior structures, open interfaces, and large payload bays allow sonar, optical, navigation, and other mission packages to be changed without redesigning the complete vehicle. Its main functions in the Strait of Hormuz include mine reconnaissance, seabed mapping, hydrographic survey, ISR, intelligence preparation of the operational environment, infrastructure inspection, and precise placement of payloads. Mine reconnaissance allows the AUV to detect and localize suspected mines before divers, RHIB crews, or larger vessels enter the same area, separating search from neutralization.
CENTCOM announced the deployment of additional underwater drones for mine-clearance operations on April 11, 2026, placing the September loss nearly five months into expanded counter-mine activity. Three Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships had also supported regional mine warfare and Common Uncrewed Surface Vessel operations, but the USS Santa Fe and USS Tulsa since appeared in Singapore and the USS Canberra in the South China Sea. U.S. mine clearance therefore combined AUVs searching below the surface, CUSVs towing sonar, Navy SEAL divers and small boats, while hydrographic AUV missions repeatedly checked depth and seabed obstructions along shipping routes near Oman. The 10-day endurance and 600 km mission distance allow the Dive-LD to operate without requiring a corresponding crewed ship to remain directly inside Iranian coastal weapon range.
The AUV can be launched outside the immediate Hormuz sector, transit submerged, execute repeated survey tracks and return, as its envelope trades low-speed endurance and sonar coverage against faster repositioning. The September incident exposes the opposite side of this autonomy: the AUV remained disabled for at least 24 hours before Iranian recovery, but as its exact failure mechanism remains unspecified, the propulsion, power, navigation, or communications cannot individually be blamed. The measurable operational problem is recovery time: an underwater vehicle able to travel hundreds of kilometers independently can also logically fail too far from the ship or shore facility capable of recovering it. The economics explain why the Dive-LD can be treated by Anduril as attritable, especially compared to a submarine, but not why intact capture should be considered insignificant by CENTCOM.
At a reported 2024 unit cost near $2.5 million, four AUVs would represent $10 million, 10 represent $25 million, 20 represent $50 million, and 40 represent $100 million before payloads, support equipment, and maintenance. Anduril said the captured vehicle had accumulated thousands of operational hours; even a conservative 2,000 hours equals 83.3 cumulative days, while 3,000 hours equals 125 days. Attrition therefore spreads acquisition cost across substantial operating time while removing personnel from mined waters, but a capture creates a separate engineering risk. An intact hull can expose propulsion, energy storage, navigation equipment, pressure hull construction, connectors, manufacturing methods, and modular payload interfaces to adversaries even when classified sensors and mission data are absent. The Dive-LD also forms part of the development path toward much larger Western-made autonomous submarines.
Dive Technologies, founded in 2018 and acquired by Anduril in 2022, also provided the technology base used in Australia's Ghost Shark program, developed with the Royal Australian Navy and Defence Science and Technology Group. The initial Australian effort allocated roughly $100 million to three iterative XL-AUV prototypes, mathematically $33.3 million each if divided evenly, although that figure includes development rather than representing a production unit price. The Ghost Shark expands from Dive-LD's 5.8 m and roughly 2.8 tonnes to a school-bus-sized vehicle with substantially more volume for energy, sensors, and payloads, including surveillance, targeting, and potential munition missions. This creates a clear attrition threshold: losing a $2.5 million reconnaissance AUV is financially different from losing an XL-UUV containing larger and more sensitive payloads, sensors, and mission systems.
The operational timeline also shows how quickly U.S. maritime autonomy moved from training into regional missions: UUVGRU-1 and UUVRON-3 trained with Dive-LD in December 2024, the first announced UUVGRU-1 delivery followed in April 2025, CENTCOM employed the vehicle during 2026, and Iran recovered one in September. Other autonomous systems were simultaneously entering combat roles. In June 2026, a Saronic Corsair uncrewed surface vessel recovered personnel from a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache that crashed in the Gulf of Oman, while explosive-laden Corsairs attacked Bandar Abbas Naval Base in July in the first known U.S. kamikaze USV strike.
However, like with the remains of the JASSM-ER missile, Iran can still dismantle the vehicle and measure hull construction, internal volume, propulsion, energy storage, buoyancy, control surfaces, navigation hardware, electrical architecture, and payload interfaces that together permit its depth and endurance performances. Iran previously recovered the RQ-170 Sentinel in 2011, attempted to seize a U.S. Navy Saildrone in the Persian Gulf on August 29, 2022, and temporarily captured two Saildrones in the Red Sea days later. Tehran will likely try to reverse-engineer the Dive-LD, although there is no evidence that Russia or China will later receive the vehicle or components, as some already claim. For the U.S. Navy, the new problem is finding localization, recovery, or denial measures capable of acting before an adversary can retrieve a disabled underwater vehicle intact.
