That assertion directly contradicts the U.S. military account and has not been independently confirmed, making battle-damage assessment a central point of dispute as both sides escalate military pressure. CENTCOM has not identified the aircraft carrier or guided-missile destroyer involved, nor disclosed the number or type of ballistic missiles launched, and it has not specified whether the ships relied primarily on maneuver, electronic warfare, decoys, interceptor missiles or a combination of defensive measures.
The original Iranian attack is significant because using ballistic missiles against maneuvering warships requires considerably more than long-range missile reach. Iranian forces must detect the ships, establish a sufficiently accurate track, update targeting information and deliver a weapon against vessels capable of rapidly changing course and speed. A missile reaching the vicinity of a carrier strike group demonstrates range, but a successful anti-ship ballistic-missile engagement depends on the entire reconnaissance-to-strike chain remaining intact long enough to generate precise targeting data against a moving naval formation.
The U.S. response shifted the confrontation from missile defense to direct economic attrition against Iranian oil shipping. American forces permanently disabled the M/T Downy off Kharg Island and the M/T Stark 1 near Jask, while the unladen M/T Kylo, also known as Noxen, was destroyed in the Gulf of Oman. Before attacking Kylo, U.S. forces directed its crew to abandon the tanker and then struck critical sections of the ship to render it unusable, demonstrating that Washington is prepared to target large maritime assets it associates with the IRGC's financing network rather than restricting retaliation to missile launchers, radars or other conventional military targets.

The U.S. CENTCOM describes the three tankers as part of a multibillion-dollar oil network supporting the IRGC and its regional affiliates. Targeting that network creates economic deterrence by threatening assets essential to moving Iranian crude and generating revenue, while remaining comparatively exposed at sea. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reinforced that approach after the strikes, warning that further Iranian attacks against American ships would bring additional action against Iran's tanker fleet, effectively linking the survivability of Iranian oil shipping to Tehran's willingness to continue targeting U.S. naval forces.
Iran responded by widening its own claims of retaliation. The confrontation is especially important around Kharg Island, Jask and the Strait of Hormuz because those locations connect Iran's military geography with its energy economy. Kharg remains central to Iranian crude exports, while Jask and the approaches to Hormuz sit along maritime routes where surveillance systems, coastal missile forces and naval units can influence commercial and military movement. Iran retains a potentially dangerous combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and coastal weapons capable of forcing U.S. naval commanders to maintain layered defenses, and even unsuccessful attacks can impose operational costs by consuming defensive ammunition, increasing surveillance requirements and compelling warships to maneuver in ways that affect flight operations or planned strike missions.
For a U.S. aircraft carrier, protection depends not only on the carrier's own defenses but on the wider naval formation. Guided-missile destroyers contribute long-range radar coverage, air and missile defense, electronic warfare, and offensive strike capacity, while embarked aircraft can extend surveillance and intercept hostile aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicles before they approach the ships. The September 5, 2026, missile engagement will consequently be important for determining how effectively Iran can maintain a targeting track against maneuvering U.S. naval forces under combat conditions.
