U.S. Marine Corps Demonstrates New Combat Capabilities with NMESIS and Amphibious Combat Vehicles.


The U.S. Marine Corps showcased its next-generation expeditionary combat capabilities during the 250th Amphibious Capabilities Demonstration at Camp Pendleton, California, featuring the Navy/Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) armed with the Naval Strike Missile and the new Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV). The live-fire event demonstrated how the Corps is expanding its ability to control contested coastlines, strike hostile warships at long range, and rapidly maneuver forces across the littoral battlespace.

The demonstration combined precision anti-ship fires with modern amphibious mobility to illustrate the Marine Corps' shift toward distributed maritime operations under Force Design 2030. Together, NMESIS and the ACV represent a more survivable and lethal expeditionary force intended to deter peer adversaries and support joint naval campaigns in future high-intensity conflicts.

Featured in a U.S. Marine Corps video produced in Arlington, Virginia, on July 31, 2026, the demonstration formed part of the Corps' 250th birthday celebrations and the United States Semiquincentennial. It highlighted the integration of long-range precision fires, amphibious armored maneuver, naval aviation, and expeditionary logistics, demonstrating how the Navy-Marine Corps team is preparing for operations in increasingly contested maritime environments.

Rather than recreating the large-scale amphibious assaults of previous decades, the event reflected the U.S. Marine Corps' evolving operational concept for high-intensity conflict. Modern Marine formations are designed to deploy rapidly from amphibious ships, establish temporary expeditionary positions along coastlines or island chains, conduct precision strikes, and reposition before an adversary can respond effectively. This distributed approach enhances survivability while extending the reach of U.S. naval forces.

The centerpiece of the demonstration was NMESIS, one of the U.S. Marine Corps' most significant new long-range precision strike capabilities. Developed under Force Design 2030, the system enables relatively small Marine formations to establish expeditionary anti-ship missile positions capable of denying hostile naval forces access to key maritime corridors.

NMESIS combines the remotely operated ROGUE-Fires launcher with the Naval Strike Missile, developed by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace in partnership with RTX. Carrying two precision-guided missiles with an engagement range exceeding 185 kilometers, the system enables Marine Littoral Regiments to engage hostile surface combatants from dispersed and concealed coastal positions while minimizing personnel exposure.

The Naval Strike Missile is specifically designed to penetrate modern naval air defense systems. Flying at very low altitude above the sea, it combines GPS navigation, inertial guidance, terrain-following capability, and an advanced imaging infrared seeker that autonomously identifies its intended target. Its low-observable profile and terminal evasive maneuvers significantly complicate interception, allowing it to threaten destroyers, frigates, amphibious assault ships, logistics vessels, and other high-value naval targets.

The demonstration also highlighted the Amphibious Combat Vehicle, which is replacing the U.S. Marine Corps' legacy Assault Amphibious Vehicle after more than fifty years of service. Developed by BAE Systems in partnership with Iveco Defence Vehicles, the ACV provides substantially improved protection, mobility, and operational flexibility during amphibious and land operations.

Unlike the legacy tracked vehicle, the 8×8 wheeled ACV combines enhanced ballistic protection with a V-shaped hull designed to improve survivability against mines and improvised explosive devices. The vehicle carries a crew of three and transports thirteen combat-equipped Marines while maintaining full amphibious capability, allowing infantry units to move directly from amphibious ships to inland objectives with considerably greater protection.

Operational mobility is another major improvement. The ACV transitions seamlessly from water to land, enabling Marine formations to advance beyond the shoreline and maneuver across challenging terrain. Multiple variants—including the personnel carrier, command, recovery, and ACV-30 equipped with a 30-mm cannon—provide commanders with a versatile family of armored vehicles capable of supporting a broad range of expeditionary missions.

Together, the ACV and NMESIS illustrate the transformation taking place within the U.S. Marine Corps under Force Design 2030. Rather than concentrating combat power in large formations that are vulnerable to long-range precision weapons, the Corps is developing smaller, highly mobile units capable of operating independently while remaining connected through joint command-and-control networks. Amphibious Combat Vehicles transport Marines to key terrain, while NMESIS provides the long-range anti-ship firepower needed to control maritime approaches.

The Camp Pendleton demonstration also reinforced the close integration between the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Amphibious warships, aviation assets, reconnaissance systems, expeditionary logistics, armored combat vehicles, and long-range precision fires operated as elements of a single naval expeditionary force. Such interoperability is central to the Marine Corps' concept of operating effectively in environments protected by sophisticated anti-access and area-denial (A2/AD) networks.

The operational relevance of these capabilities is particularly evident in the Indo-Pacific, where the United States is adapting its force posture to address increasingly sophisticated maritime threats. In a potential contingency involving Taiwan, the South China Sea, or the First Island Chain, Marine Littoral Regiments equipped with NMESIS could rapidly establish expeditionary missile positions on strategically located islands, creating overlapping anti-ship engagement zones that would complicate operations by China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

Combined with intelligence from joint sensors, unmanned systems, naval aviation, and surface combatants, these dispersed Marine units would extend the U.S. Navy's Distributed Maritime Operations concept by increasing the fleet's ability to detect, track, and engage hostile naval forces from land. Their effectiveness, however, would also depend on sustained logistics, resilient command-and-control networks, and the ability to maintain access to forward expeditionary positions under contested conditions.

Although the event commemorated the U.S. Marine Corps' 250th anniversary, it also showcased the practical results of the Corps' modernization strategy. The integration of NMESIS, the Naval Strike Missile, and the Amphibious Combat Vehicle demonstrated how the Marine Corps is reshaping its expeditionary force to support distributed maritime operations against increasingly capable adversaries. As Force Design 2030 continues to mature, these capabilities are expected to play an increasingly important role in strengthening naval deterrence, supporting joint operations, and enabling Marine forces to operate effectively across the Indo-Pacific's contested littoral environment.
