U.S. A-10 Escort of Nuclear Submarine USS Nebraska Signals a New Response to Pacific Maritime Threats.

The demonstration underscored how the United States intends to protect its most survivable nuclear deterrent even during its most exposed phase, reinforcing the credibility and resilience of its sea-based strategic forces.

The exercise highlighted the A-10’s ability to provide persistent surveillance, rapid threat identification and immediate firepower against aircraft, drones and fast-moving surface threats approaching the submarine. It also reflects a broader shift toward integrated joint-force protection of ballistic missile submarines, strengthening deterrence by ensuring that even a surfaced U.S. SSBN remains covered by layered air and naval defenses.

A U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II escorted the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) while the submarine operated on the surface in the Pacific Ocean on July 28, 2026. Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet presented the mission as an armed airborne escort exercise, while Commander, Submarine Group 9 said it demonstrated joint-force readiness to protect ballistic missile submarines and preserve their credibility, reliability and survivability. The carefully released imagery delivered a broader strategic message: even when an American SSBN is visible on the surface, it remains protected by the reach, surveillance capabilities and immediate combat power of the U.S. joint force.

The A-10 as a Close Maritime Guardian

The selection of the A-10 was operationally significant. The Thunderbolt II can fly at relatively low speed, remain over an area for extended periods and operate close to the force it is protecting, making it well suited to escorting a submarine whose speed and maneuverability are constrained while surfaced. Its 30 mm GAU-8/A cannon, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, AGM-65 Maverick missiles, rockets, precision-guided weapons and AIM-9 Sidewinders provide commanders with several options against surface and low-altitude threats. In this role, however, its greatest value lies in persistent observation, rapid identification and the ability to deter approaching contacts before they penetrate the submarine’s immediate security perimeter.

The Navy did not report a specific threat during the exercise. Nevertheless, the mission appears designed to rehearse responses to fast attack craft, unmanned surface vessels, drones, helicopters or aircraft attempting to approach, monitor, geolocate or interfere with the SSBN. The threat would not necessarily begin with a direct attack: an unauthorized or adversarial platform could attempt to record the submarine’s position, direction of movement, escort procedures or route toward deeper water. An A-10 orbiting nearby creates a localized armed protection zone and gives commanders an immediate response option against precisely these close-range threats.



Protecting an SSBN at Its Most Exposed

Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines derive their strategic value from stealth. Once submerged, they are among the most difficult military platforms in the world to detect and track, preserving the United States’ assured nuclear second-strike capability. USS Nebraska can carry up to 20 Trident II D5 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, making it not merely a naval asset but a central component of the U.S. nuclear triad and one of the most consequential strategic platforms operated by the United States.

When an SSBN operates on the surface, however, its visual, radar and infrared signatures increase, while its location and direction of movement become easier to observe. Its ability to use the ocean for concealment is temporarily reduced, and small boats, aircraft or unmanned systems can approach from multiple directions. This explains Submarine Group 9’s emphasis on protection during “critical surfaced operations.” The escort is not compensating for a weakness in the SSBN force; it is securing the sensitive transition between port or coastal waters and the deep ocean, where stealth, mobility and operational unpredictability again become the submarine’s principal defenses.

The Strategic Value of an Undisclosed Pacific Location

The decision to identify the location only as the Pacific Ocean was almost certainly intended to protect sensitive operational information. Revealing the precise area could expose submarine transit patterns, escort procedures, response times or the bases supporting the aircraft. By publishing the imagery while withholding the operational geometry, the United States revealed the existence of the capability without surrendering the details required to anticipate where, when or how it might be employed. The A-10’s characteristics suggest that the aircraft was likely protecting a defined phase of the submarine’s surfaced movement rather than accompanying USS Nebraska throughout an extended Pacific transit. This points to a terminal-area protection concept in which joint air and surface forces shield the SSBN through its most observable phase until concealment beneath the ocean once again becomes its dominant defense.

The A-10 escort of USS Nebraska was more than a formation flight. It demonstrated that protecting America’s sea-based nuclear deterrent is becoming an increasingly integrated joint-force mission, combining Navy command and control with Air Force surveillance, deterrence and immediately available firepower. America’s ballistic missile submarines remain the most survivable element of the nuclear triad, but Washington is making clear that their protection does not begin only after they disappear beneath the surface. The message to allies is one of strategic assurance; the message to potential adversaries is unmistakable: a surfaced American SSBN may be observable, but no adversary should assume that it is isolated or undefended.
