Japan Fires First US-Made Tomahawk Cruise Missile from Aegis Destroyer Validating Strike Capability.
Japan successfully fired a U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missile from the Aegis-equipped destroyer JS Chokai on July 29, marking the country's first live operational launch of the weapon from a surface combatant. The milestone advances Tokyo's effort to build a credible long-range maritime strike capability and strengthens allied deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.
The live firing confirmed the successful integration of the Tomahawk weapon system aboard the Kongo-class destroyer after months of ship modifications, software integration, and operational training conducted in the United States. The launch demonstrates that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has reached a key operational milestone in fielding stand-off precision strike capability, expanding its ability to engage high-value targets at extended ranges in support of Japan's evolving defense strategy.

The launch concludes an integration process that began when JS Chokai deployed to San Diego in September 2025 for modifications and crew training with the U.S. Navy. The destroyer completed its conversion in March 2026 before entering an extensive qualification phase covering mission planning, missile handling, launch procedures, and tactical employment. According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the firing validates both the successful integration of the missile and the crew's ability to conduct live operations, paving the way for the ship's return to Japan later this year and its assignment to Sasebo Naval Base.
Japan's acquisition of the Tomahawk forms part of the counterattack capability introduced in the 2022 National Defense Strategy. The objective is to provide the Self-Defense Forces with the means to engage hostile missile launch sites, command facilities, and other high-value targets from stand-off distances rather than relying exclusively on defensive interceptors. Tokyo plans to acquire up to 400 missiles, including 200 Block IV and 200 Block V variants, under a program valued at approximately $1.03 billion. Deliveries are scheduled between fiscal years 2025 and 2027, with Japanese authorities maintaining that the timetable remains unchanged despite increasing demand for long-range precision munitions.
The Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise Missile, designated BGM-109 and manufactured by Raytheon Technologies, is a subsonic long-range cruise missile introduced into U.S. service in 1983. It is launched from the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System installed aboard surface combatants or from submarine torpedo tubes. Powered by a Williams F107-WR-402 turbofan engine after separation from its solid-fuel booster, the missile cruises at approximately Mach 0.75, or around 880 km/h. The Block IV version offers a range of approximately 1,600 kilometers, while the latest Block V extends this to more than 1,800 kilometers and adds improved survivability together with a maritime strike capability against moving naval targets. Guidance combines an inertial navigation system, GPS, Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM), Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation (DSMAC), and a two-way data link that enables in-flight mission updates and retargeting.
JS Chokai belongs to the Kongo class, itself derived from the U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke Flight I design. The destroyer is equipped with the Aegis Combat System centered on the AN/SPY-1D phased-array radar and the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System capable of firing a broad family of missiles. Before receiving the Tomahawk, the ship already operated Standard Missile interceptors for area air defense and ballistic missile defense missions. The integration of a long-range land-attack weapon therefore expands the destroyer's operational spectrum without requiring major structural changes to its launch architecture.
The new capability changes the employment options available to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Selected Aegis destroyers will now be able to conduct precision strikes against fixed strategic targets far inland while remaining outside many coastal threat envelopes. Combined with secure mission planning, network-enabled targeting, and the mobility of a surface combatant, the Tomahawk provides commanders with an additional conventional strike option that complements Japan's existing missile defense posture. It also improves interoperability with the U.S. Navy by allowing Japanese destroyers to participate in coordinated long-range maritime strike operations using compatible combat systems and mission planning procedures. By the completion of the current modernization program, five of Japan's eight Aegis destroyers, including JS Chokai, JS Kirishima, JS Haguro, JS Myoko, and JS Atago, are expected to receive the capability before it is progressively extended to the remainder of the fleet.
The Tomahawk launch also concludes an intensive period of live-fire activity for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force during U.S.-led multinational exercises. In recent weeks, Japanese units have fired Hellfire missiles, Type 90 anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, Harpoon missiles, and SM-2 surface-to-air missiles during Valiant Shield 2026 and RIMPAC 2026. These exercises demonstrate that Tokyo is pairing the introduction of new weapon systems with realistic operational training, allowing crews to validate procedures and strengthen interoperability under demanding conditions.
Beyond the technical achievement, the successful firing reflects the continuing evolution of Japan's defense posture in response to a deteriorating security environment across the Indo-Pacific. Tokyo faces an increasingly complex strategic environment shaped by China's rapid military modernization and expanding naval presence in the East China Sea and around Taiwan, North Korea's continued development of ballistic and cruise missiles, and growing military cooperation between China and Russia in waters and airspace near the Japanese archipelago.
