Germany Evaluates Joint Strike Missile for P-8A Poseidon to Restore Long-Range Anti-Ship Capability.


Germany's Naval Aviation Command is evaluating the integration of the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) on its Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to restore a long-range anti-ship strike capability. The move would significantly strengthen Germany's ability to counter surface threats as NATO faces growing Russian naval activity across Northern European waters.

The proposed integration would allow the P-8A Poseidon to move beyond its traditional anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance missions by adding a precision stand-off strike capability against hostile surface vessels. The effort is intended to close a capability gap that has existed since the German Navy transferred its Panavia Tornado aircraft to the Luftwaffe about twenty-five years ago, giving Berlin a more versatile maritime aircraft able to detect, track, and engage naval targets across the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the North Atlantic.

Germany ordered five P-8A Poseidon aircraft in June 2021 to replace its aging P-3C Orion fleet before placing a second order for three additional aircraft in November 2023. The first aircraft was delivered to Marinefliegergeschwader 3 at Nordholz in November 2025 and, by the summer of 2026, three aircraft had already entered service. The remaining five are scheduled for delivery by 2029. The acquisition effectively replaced the Franco-German Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) as the immediate successor to the Orion fleet and aligns German Naval Aviation with several NATO allies already operating the Poseidon, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Norway.

According to statements by Captain Broder Nielsen reported by Defense One following the Farnborough International Airshow, restoring a kinetic strike capability has become one of the Marineflieger's main priorities. Nielsen explained that German naval aviation lost its organic anti-ship capability when the Panavia Tornado fleet was transferred to the Luftwaffe and identified the Norwegian-developed Joint Strike Missile as a credible option to close that gap. At the same time, Berlin is preparing to acquire four additional P-8A aircraft. Subject to Bundestag approval, the purchase would increase the German fleet to twelve aircraft over the coming years.

Derived from the Boeing 737-800ERX airframe, the P-8A Poseidon is powered by two CFM56-7B27A turbofan engines, each producing approximately 121 kN of thrust. The aircraft reaches a maximum speed of around 907 km/h and has a mission radius exceeding 2,200 kilometers while remaining on station for more than four hours, with endurance that can be extended through aerial refueling. Its mission system includes the AN/APY-10 multimode radar, a comprehensive suite of electro-optical and electronic sensors, and an acoustic processing system capable of managing up to 129 sonobuoys. The aircraft is also equipped with Link 11 and Link 16 data links, allowing real-time tactical information sharing with surface combatants, allied aircraft, and command centers.

In its currently certified configuration, the P-8A can employ the Mk 54 lightweight torpedo and the AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile. However, the Joint Strike Missile is not yet part of its approved weapons inventory. Developed by Kongsberg from the Naval Strike Missile, the JSM is a subsonic cruise missile measuring nearly four meters in length and weighing approximately 416 kg. Its range is generally estimated at more than 350 kilometers depending on the flight profile. It combines inertial and GPS navigation, an imaging infrared seeker, autonomous target recognition, and a sea-skimming flight profile designed to reduce detectability. Originally developed for the F-35, it has been ordered by Norway, the United States, Japan and Australia.



To date, no operator has integrated or fielded the Joint Strike Missile on the P-8A Poseidon. Such a configuration would require a full integration program covering separation trials, software qualification, mission system interface modifications, and certification across the missile's operating envelope. The German Navy's interest therefore represents a capability objective rather than a formally launched acquisition program. If implemented, Germany would likely become the first operator to combine the P-8A with the JSM.

From an operational perspective, this combination would provide the Marineflieger with both detection and strike capabilities on a single platform. A P-8A could detect and track a hostile naval task group at long range using its radar and passive sensors, receive or transmit targeting data through allied tactical networks, and engage a surface target without relying immediately on fighter aircraft. This capability would complement the future NH90 Sea Tiger helicopters equipped with the Marte ER anti-ship missile, which has a range of approximately 100 kilometers, as well as the eight MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aircraft ordered by Germany for maritime surveillance missions. It would also reinforce the capabilities of the German Navy's surface fleet by providing a mobile, rapidly deployable long-range strike option.

For Germany, this development reflects its specific strategic environment. Located on NATO's northeastern flank, the country contributes to the continuous surveillance of the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the North Atlantic alongside the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway and other Alliance members. The threats include not only Russian submarines but also surface combatants capable of disrupting maritime lines of communication, transatlantic reinforcement routes and critical underwater infrastructure such as telecommunications cables and energy networks. Within this context, a P-8A armed with JSM missiles would complement rather than replace the existing capabilities of the Luftwaffe or the German Navy. It would primarily shorten the timeline between target detection and engagement while strengthening Germany's contribution to NATO's maritime deterrence posture.
