Russia Unveils New RVV-SDM Missile to Reinforce the Su-57E’s Global Export Campaign.


Russia has launched an international campaign to market the RVV-SDM medium-range air-to-air missile alongside the Su-57E fighter, reinforcing the aircraft’s position as a complete fifth-generation combat system rather than a stand-alone platform. Announced by Rostec on July 29, 2026, and reported by TASS, the initiative is strategically significant because the credibility of modern stealth fighters depends as much on integrated beyond-visual-range weapons as on low observability and advanced sensors.

The RVV-SDM expands the Su-57E’s layered air-combat capability by bridging short-range and long-range engagements while offering improved performance against aircraft, cruise missiles, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems in contested electronic-warfare environments. Combined with the RVV-MD2 and RVV-BD missile family, it strengthens Russia’s export pitch by presenting the Su-57E as a flexible air-superiority and interceptor platform aligned with the growing emphasis on networked air combat, survivability, and multi-layered aerial warfare.

On July 29, 2026, Rosoboronexport launched a global marketing campaign for Russia’s new RVV-SDM medium-range air-to-air missile. According to an official Rostec announcement reported by TASS, the weapon is designed primarily for the export-oriented Su-57E fifth-generation fighter produced by United Aircraft Corporation. The development goes beyond the introduction of another missile by presenting the Su-57E as part of a complete short-, medium- and long-range air-combat architecture. For prospective operators, the announcement is relevant because the value of an advanced fighter depends on the maturity, availability and electronic resilience of its weapons as much as on its sensors and reduced radar signature.

Why Russia Is Launching the RVV-SDM Campaign

Rosoboronexport’s decision to begin international promotion of the RVV-SDM appears intended to reduce a central risk in fifth-generation fighter procurement: acquiring an advanced aircraft without a sufficiently mature weapons ecosystem. A credible export package must include more than the fighter itself. It also requires compatible missiles, launchers, fire-control software, mission-planning systems, training equipment, maintenance support and a sustainable supply chain. By marketing the RVV-SDM alongside the short-range RVV-MD2 and long-range RVV-BD, Russia is presenting the Su-57E as a mission-ready air-combat system for Within Visual Range engagements, Beyond Visual Range combat, Combat Air Patrol and Defensive Counter Air operations.

The campaign also gives the RVV-SDM commercial potential beyond new Su-57E customers. Rostec and TASS state that the missile can be used by other Russian-built aircraft after appropriate modification and may also be integrated into the armament systems of foreign-made platforms. Such integration would require aircraft-interface development, mission-computer adaptation, weapons-separation testing, flight-envelope clearance and live-fire certification. Even without a Su-57E sale, the missile could create longer-term demand for launch equipment, software support, test systems, training and maintenance services.

What the RVV-SDM Adds to the Su-57E

Rostec describes the RVV-SDM as a day-and-night air-to-air missile designed to engage fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles in an electronic-countermeasures environment. Its disclosed guidance architecture combines an inertial control system, a radio-update link and an active/passive radar seeker. The missile can engage targets flying at altitudes from 15 metres to 25 kilometres and at speeds of up to Mach 3. The Mach 3 figure refers to the speed of the target, not the missile’s own maximum velocity. Rosoboronexport also claims a longer launch range, increased power-to-weight ratio, improved aerodynamic performance, greater effectiveness and enhanced resistance to jamming, although the announcement provides no numerical maximum range, seeker acquisition distance or no-escape-zone data.

The RVV-SDM appears intended to become the principal export-oriented medium-range weapon in the Su-57E package, but available information does not establish that it replaces every R-77-family missile associated with the aircraft. The earlier R-77 family, known in NATO terminology as the AA-12 Adder, remains Russia’s established active-radar Beyond Visual Range missile family. Army Recognition notes that the export RVV-SD has been officially described with a maximum engagement range of up to 110 kilometres, using inertial guidance and radio correction before active radar homing during the terminal phase. No equivalent numerical range has been published for the RVV-SDM, making direct performance comparisons premature.

The new missile’s most significant advertised feature is its active/passive radar seeker. A passive channel could provide additional engagement options against emitting or jamming targets and may reduce reliance on active terminal emissions under selected conditions. It does not, however, make the complete missile engagement automatically undetectable. Rosoboronexport’s description of “complete stealth” should be treated as a manufacturer claim rather than an independently demonstrated technical characteristic, particularly while seeker operating modes and emissions behaviour remain undisclosed. The radio-update link confirms that the missile can receive mid-course corrections through the launching platform’s fire-control architecture before terminal seeker acquisition; the public release does not specify whether updates can also be transmitted directly from off-board sensors.



A Layered Air-to-Air Weapons Package

Within the proposed Su-57E weapons package, the RVV-MD2 would cover short-range and close-combat engagements, the RVV-SDM would provide the principal medium-range BVR layer, and the RVV-BD would support longer-range interception. This tiered structure could allow operators to match weapons to different target sets, including manoeuvring fighters, helicopters, cruise missiles, UAVs and high-value airborne support platforms. Effective engagement range would still depend on launch altitude, aircraft speed, target aspect, target manoeuvring, electronic attack, mid-course update quality and the wider sensor-to-shooter chain. A manufacturer’s maximum range figure should not be interpreted as a guaranteed combat distance under every engagement geometry.

Rostec states that Su-57E weapons can be carried internally to reduce radar signature or externally when greater payload capacity is required. This trade-off is central to the aircraft’s potential operational flexibility. Internal carriage supports lower-observable penetration and reduces aerodynamic drag, while external carriage increases magazine depth but raises radar cross-section and imposes performance and endurance penalties. Army Recognition assessed unconfirmed imagery appearing to show Su-57 aircraft with external AKU-ASP launchers carrying R-73/R-74 short-range and R-77-family medium-range missiles. If authentic, the configuration could indicate a missile-heavy Defensive Counter Air role focused on patrol, cruise-missile interception, UAV defence and protection of strategic airspace. The imagery has not been confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defence and should be treated as an open-source indication rather than evidence of an established operational configuration.

Why Russia Is Seeking Su-57E Exports

Exporting the Su-57E could provide Russia with industrial, financial and strategic benefits. Foreign orders may support production volume, preserve specialist suppliers, distribute programme costs across a larger fleet and help finance future upgrades. Fighter exports also create long-term defence relationships through pilot training, spare-parts delivery, missile replenishment, software support, depot maintenance and mid-life modernization. For countries already operating Russian combat aircraft, established maintenance practices and partial weapons commonality may strengthen the commercial appeal. Prospective customers will still examine delivery schedules, production priority between domestic and export orders, engine support, missile availability, software access, integration with national command-and-control networks and exposure to sanctions or supply-chain restrictions. Rosoboronexport says Russian Armed Forces requirements will retain priority, making production capacity and delivery assurance important elements of any future negotiation.

Strategic Outlook

The RVV-SDM campaign shows that Russia wants the Su-57E evaluated as a complete air-combat ecosystem rather than solely as a fifth-generation airframe. Its active/passive seeker, electronic-countermeasures focus and potential compatibility with several aircraft types strengthen the export proposition, while the RVV-MD2, RVV-SDM and RVV-BD provide the basis for a layered air-to-air weapons package.

The decisive test will not be the missile’s inclusion in an export catalogue, but whether Russia can demonstrate credible seeker performance, electronic protection, internal-carriage compatibility, production capacity and sustained logistical support. For prospective customers, the key question is whether the Su-57E, its weapons and its support infrastructure can function as one reliable, interoperable and supportable combat system throughout the fleet’s operational life.
