Description
The BRDM-3 is a reconnaissance wheeled armoured vehicle designed and manufactured by Russia. The BRDM-3 is based on the chassis of the Russian wheeled armoured vehicle personnel carrier BTR-80A. This vehicle is not in service with Russian army, but a contract was signed with Kenya for 88 vehicles. In the sale agreement, Kenya approved the delivery of these vehicles by the end of the year 2011. The reconnaissance vehicles were acquired from Russia’s top arms company Rosoboronexport after Kenya sought to purchase 88 of these vehicles for a total cost of $105.6 million in August 2011.

Armament
The BRDM-3 is equipped with the same armament as the BTR-80A. BRDM-3 has a one man turret armed with an automatic 30mm 2A72 cannon and coaxial 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun mounted to the right of the main armament. Either side of the cannon is a bank of three 81mm smoke grenade launchers. The gun can fire at a maximum range of 1,500 m during the day and 800 m at night.
Design and protection
The armour protection of the BRDM-3 has the same level of BTR-80A. Over the frontal arc the welded steel armour provides protection against attack from 12.7 mm AP rounds at a distance of 100 m, the upper part of the hull provides protection against 7.62 mm AP rounds at a range of 100 m while the lower part of the hull provides protection against 7.62 mm AP rounds fired from a range of 750 m. Among the minor differences between the BTR-80A and the BRDM-3, the BRDM-3 has no firing ports on the side and front of the hull. Only the side door is equipped with a firing port.
Propulsion
The BRDM-3 is powered by a V8 cylinder KAMAZ 7403 turbocharged diesel developing 260 hp. The engine compartment is at the rear of the vehicle. The BRDM-3 uses a 8x8 chassis as the BTR-80A. The wheels are utilized with independent torsion-bar suspension and the traverse arms have high capacity telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers. The BRDM-3 has an off-road capability comparable to a tracked vehicle, it can run at a maximum speed of 80km/h on road.
Accessories
The BRDM-3 is equipped with day sight view 1PZ-9 and night sight TPN-3-42. To conduct reconnaissance mission, the BRDM-3 is fitted with radiological ground station, laser instrument exploration, chemical detection equipment, night vision binoculars, mine detector and navigation equipment TNA-4-6. Radio transmissions are ensured by HF and VHF radios. The BRDM-3 is also fitted with a central tyre-pressure regulation system. The BRDM-3 is fully amphibious and propelled in the water by a single water-jet at the rear of the hull at a maximum speed of 10 km/h.
