UK Places Carrier HMS Prince of Wales Under NATO Control for High North F-35B Fighter Operations.


The United Kingdom has placed the HMS Prince of Wales carrier strike group under NATO operational control for Neptune Strike 26-3, conducted from 17 to 23 July 2026 in the High North and North Atlantic. The move gives NATO a mobile F-35B airbase with layered air defence, anti-submarine protection and sustained logistics support across its northern maritime approaches.

Led by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, the formation links the British carrier group with a Spanish expeditionary force and contributions from 14 Allies. Its combined air, surface and undersea warfare capability strengthens NATO’s ability to defend the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap and rapidly project combat power across the North Atlantic.

HMS Prince of Wales is a 65,000-tonne, 280-metre aircraft carrier with a speed exceeding 25 knots and space for approximately 40 aircraft, although its Neptune Strike air group is much smaller: eight F-35B Lightning fighters, three Merlin Mk2 helicopters, two Wildcat HMA2 helicopters and two Malloy T150B cargo unmanned aerial vehicles. The F-35B can reach Mach 1.6 and 50,000 feet, and carries the AN/APG-81 active electronically scanned-array radar, Distributed Aperture System, Electro-Optical Targeting System, Link 16 and the low-probability-of-intercept Multifunction Advanced Data Link. The declared British weapon inventory includes AMRAAM, ASRAAM and Meteor air-to-air missiles and Paveway IV guided bombs, although NATO has not stated which weapons were loaded during Neptune Strike. Eight fighters can generate alert aircraft, two-ship combat air patrols and limited strike packages, but this is an exercise-scale air group, not the volume required for sustained high-intensity operations; the carrier embarked 18 F-35Bs during its 2025 deployment.

The escorts determine whether that air group can remain operational inside a contested maritime area. HMS Duncan carries up to 48 vertically launched Aster missiles in the Sea Viper system; Royal Navy data gives an engagement range of up to 75 miles, missile speed above Mach 4 and radar detection ranges approaching 250 miles through the Sampson multifunction radar and long-range surveillance radar. HMS Somerset covers a different threat axis with Sonar 2087, hull-mounted sonar and embarked Merlin support for submarine detection, while Sea Ceptor provides local air defence and the Naval Strike Missile gives the frigate an over-the-horizon anti-ship capability. FS Aquitaine adds another modern anti-submarine frigate and separates search sectors between British and French crews. This layered arrangement is more operationally relevant than the carrier’s own defensive armament of Phalanx close-in guns and 30 mm cannon, which is intended only for threats that have penetrated the outer screen.

The rotary-wing force fills the areas that ship radars and fixed-wing fighters cannot cover continuously. Merlin Mk2 helicopters deploy sonobuoys to establish passive acoustic barriers, then use dipping sonar to classify and localize contacts before employing Sting Ray lightweight torpedoes; the current Sting Ray Mod 1 reaches approximately 45 knots and uses active and passive acoustic homing. Wildcat HMA2 helicopters can carry the lightweight Martlet missile against fast boats and unmanned aircraft, the heavier Sea Venom missile against patrol ships and corvettes, Sting Ray torpedoes and a 12.7 mm M3M machine gun. The Malloy T150B is not a strike aircraft in Royal Navy service but a logistics tool able to lift 68 kilograms, fly for roughly 20 to 40 minutes and reach 60 mph. Moving spares, blood, ammunition or electronic components by unmanned aircraft reduces helicopter use for routine deliveries and preserves crewed aircraft hours for surveillance, submarine hunting and casualty evacuation.

The High North imposes technical problems that cannot be reproduced reliably in temperate waters. Freshwater from ice melt changes salinity and creates acoustic layers that can refract sonar energy, shorten detection ranges or produce uncertain contacts, while long distances increase dependence on tankers, satellite communications and shore-based maritime patrol aircraft. The threat is not theoretical: on 7 July, F-35Bs from 809 Naval Air Squadron launched from HMS Prince of Wales to intercept a Russian Tu-142 maritime patrol aircraft in the Norwegian Sea as it dropped sonobuoys near the British group. The carrier and HMS Duncan were reported capable of tracking aircraft beyond 200 miles, while shipboard fighter controllers directed the interception. That event gave the subsequent NATO activity a concrete tactical baseline involving identification, track correlation, fighter control and rules-of-engagement management against an actual Russian military aircraft.

For NATO, interoperability is not demonstrated by ships sailing in formation. It requires British, French, Spanish, Danish and other crews to exchange recognized air and maritime tracks, reconcile different sensor classifications, assign engagement responsibility, control aircraft across national boundaries and transfer tactical control without losing time or information. Neptune Strike connects STRIKFORNATO with Joint Force Command Norfolk, NATO Air Command and the combined air operations centres at Uedem and Torrejón. RFA Tidespring’s replenishment activity with Danish patrol vessel HDMS Thetis tested a less visible but equally important requirement: whether one Ally can fuel or support another nation’s ship using compatible procedures, communications and deck teams. These command-and-support relationships matter because a North Atlantic reinforcement operation would involve forces arriving at different times from several national commands.

The deployment also has to be assessed against criticism of British readiness during the 2026 Iran war. After RAF Akrotiri was struck by an Iranian-made drone on 1 March, HMS Dragon did not depart until 10 March and reached the eastern Mediterranean on 23 March; France, Greece and Italy moved warships toward Cyprus within days. HMS Prince of Wales had its notice to sail reduced to five days but was not deployed. The issue was force generation rather than the theoretical performance of individual warships: Britain had 38,000 naval personnel and only 13 destroyers and frigates, with ships divided among maintenance, training and operational commitments. Neptune Strike does not resolve those structural constraints, and an eight-fighter air group says little about missile stocks or the ability to replace combat losses. It does, however, provide evidence that Britain can currently assemble a carrier, aircraft, escorts and tanker, place them under NATO command and conduct missions at sea. After the Iran-war delays, that observable fact carries more deterrent value than a readiness declaration issued while the ships remain in port.
