U.S. Navy Awards $271M Aegis Mk 99 Fire Control System Contract for U.S. and Allied Warships.


The U.S. Navy has awarded Raytheon Missiles and Defense a $271.49 million contract to produce Aegis Weapon System Mk 99 Fire Control System equipment, Aegis modernization hardware, and engineering support for U.S., Australian, and Japanese warships, reinforcing the combat effectiveness of one of the world's most capable naval air and missile defense networks. Announced by the U.S. Department of Defense, the award strengthens allied fleets' ability to defeat advanced missile, aircraft, and drone threats while enhancing collective maritime security across the Indo-Pacific.

The Mk 99 Fire Control System is a core component of the Aegis combat system, providing the precision fire-control capability required to engage multiple airborne and missile threats simultaneously. Continued modernization of this system improves fleet survivability, supports the integration of next-generation sensors and interceptors, and reinforces interoperable air and missile defense across U.S. and allied naval forces.

Announced by the U.S. Department of War/Defense on August 3, 2026, the firm-fixed-price and cost-plus-fixed-fee contract includes options that could increase its total value to $302.48 million. The procurement allocates 97 percent of the contract value to the U.S. Navy, with 2 percent supporting Australia and 1 percent supporting Japan under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. Contract performance is scheduled to continue through July 2032, underscoring Washington's long-term commitment to sustaining allied naval missile defense capabilities.

The award comes as the U.S. Navy accelerates modernization of its Aegis fleet to counter increasingly sophisticated anti-ship ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems, and saturation attacks, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where China's expanding naval capabilities and long-range precision strike systems continue to reshape the regional security environment. Maintaining the Mk 99 Fire Control System architecture ensures existing Aegis-equipped warships remain fully capable while newer AN/SPY-6 Air and Missile Defense Radar-equipped destroyers gradually enter operational service.

Although the Department of Defense did not disclose the number of shipsets included or specify whether the procurement covers newly manufactured equipment, modernization kits, or refurbishment, the contract reflects the Navy's continuing strategy of upgrading every critical element of the Aegis Weapon System rather than focusing solely on next-generation sensors. The scope includes production of Mk 99 Fire Control System equipment, Aegis modernization hardware, and engineering support, indicating continued investment in maintaining the complete missile engagement chain across both existing and future surface combatants.

The Mk 99 Fire Control System serves as the final engagement element of the Aegis Weapon System. Working alongside the AN/SPY radar family and the AN/SPG-62 continuous-wave illuminator, it controls missile engagements by providing terminal guidance for interceptors including the Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) family, SM-6 during semi-active engagement phases, and the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM). Despite the arrival of increasingly networked combat systems and active-seeker interceptors, the Mk 99 remains essential for engaging multiple airborne threats simultaneously while maintaining high interception accuracy.

The contract also supports the U.S. Navy's broader transition toward AN/SPY-6 Air and Missile Defense Radar-equipped Flight III Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, which deliver substantially greater detection range, tracking capacity, and ballistic missile defense performance than previous Aegis generations. While the SPY-6 transforms long-range sensing and target discrimination, successful missile interception still depends on modernized Mk 99 Fire Control System equipment capable of directing interceptors during the terminal phase of engagement. This combination enables Aegis Baseline 10 warships to exploit the full potential of the Navy's latest radar technology while continuing to employ its extensive inventory of Standard Missiles.

For Australia, the procurement is expected to support continued modernization of the Royal Australian Navy's Hobart-class guided-missile destroyers, which are receiving Aegis combat system upgrades to enhance integrated air and missile defense while expanding long-range strike capabilities. Modernized Mk 99 Fire Control System equipment will strengthen the destroyers' ability to defend naval task groups against advanced cruise missiles, aircraft, and unmanned aerial threats while improving interoperability with U.S. naval forces operating throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Japan's participation aligns with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's continued investment in Aegis-equipped surface combatants, including the Kongō, Atago, and Maya-class guided-missile destroyers, as well as the future Aegis System Equipped Vessels (ASEVs) currently under development. Sustaining common Mk 99 Fire Control System hardware supports logistics standardization and ensures seamless integration with U.S. missile defense operations while reinforcing Japan's ability to counter increasingly sophisticated regional ballistic missile threats.

The Department of Defense announcement does not identify the specific warships receiving the equipment, the number of Mk 99 Fire Control Systems being procured, or the planned installation schedule. Likewise, it does not clarify whether the hardware is intended primarily for new construction or modernization programs. Such information is typically withheld from contract announcements, with detailed fleet allocations generally emerging later through Navy budget documentation and acquisition updates.

Beyond its financial value, the contract demonstrates that the U.S. Navy is modernizing every layer of the Aegis combat architecture rather than relying solely on more capable sensors. As China continues expanding its naval power, missile inventories, and anti-access/area-denial capabilities, while drone and hypersonic threats become increasingly prominent across the Indo-Pacific, sustaining the Mk 99 Fire Control System ensures U.S., Japanese, and Australian warships can continue employing proven Standard Missile interceptors within an increasingly networked and resilient allied missile defense architecture. The award therefore represents not merely a sustainment contract, but a strategic investment in preserving combat credibility and allied maritime deterrence across one of the world's most contested operational theaters.
