BAE Systems has secured a £135 million contract to maintain and repair the Royal Navy’s Sting Ray and Spearfish torpedoes, ensuring two of the UK’s most important undersea weapons remain combat-ready for frontline operations. Announced by the UK Ministry of Defence on 4 August 2026, the three-year award strengthens Britain’s anti-submarine warfare and nuclear deterrence by sustaining the availability of critical underwater strike capabilities.
The contract will keep the Royal Navy’s lightweight Sting Ray and heavyweight Spearfish torpedoes operational through repair, certification and technical support, preserving the specialist expertise needed to return complex weapons to service. On 4 August 2026, the UK Ministry of Defence announced a £135 million contract for BAE Systems to maintain and repair the Royal Navy’s Sting Ray and Spearfish torpedoes. The three-year award will keep two of Britain’s most important underwater weapons safe, reliable and combat-ready, leaving the country better protected from undersea threats while sustaining hundreds of skilled UK jobs. The announcement reinforces a central reality of maritime security: torpedoes are among the Royal Navy’s most important tools for keeping the United Kingdom safe at sea.
Contract Secures Torpedo Support Through 2029
The Torpedo Repair and Maintenance contract will run from July 2026 to June 2029, directly supporting 150 engineering and technician positions at BAE Systems, including 100 in Portsmouth and 50 across Edinburgh, Chelmsford and near Glasgow. A further 165 jobs will be sustained through the company’s UK supply chain, bringing the total supported to approximately 315. More than a conventional repair award, the extension preserves the specialist workforce, infrastructure, technical knowledge and configuration-control expertise required to return complex underwater weapons safely to operational service. BAE Systems says it has maintained consistently high levels of UK torpedo availability since 2019, while the new agreement will bridge current support arrangements to WHITEHEAD2, the modernised long-term solution planned from 2029.
Layered Protection Against Undersea Threats
Sting Ray Mod 1 provides the lightweight layer of the UK’s anti-submarine warfare capability. In service with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, it can be deployed from frigates, helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft against submarine targets in both open-ocean and coastal environments. Its acoustic homing and highly accurate navigation systems allow it to detect, classify and attack targets autonomously, giving commanders a rapidly deployable response to submarine contacts across a wide operating area. Its support concept is equally significant: BAE Systems designed Sting Ray Mod 1 for a 20-year shelf life without planned intrusive maintenance beyond periodic testing, with longer-life seals, improved bearing lubrication and electro-mechanical actuation reducing routine support demands. A software-oriented architecture and substantial spare processing capacity also provide a pathway for future improvements against evolving acoustic countermeasures and increasingly difficult targets.
Spearfish provides the heavyweight component of this layered capability and is the Royal Navy’s frontline submarine-launched weapon against both underwater and surface targets. It combines active and passive homing, two-way data exchange with the launching submarine, high-speed terminal attack and advanced signal processing designed to distinguish genuine targets from background noise, acoustic countermeasures and evasive manoeuvres. Its tactical system can automatically select a re-attack mode when necessary, while its large warhead is intended for use against both double-hulled submarines and large surface vessels. Spearfish’s modular, software-intensive architecture allows components to be replaced and capabilities updated without replacing the complete weapon, while BAE Systems’ support extends from configuration management and spares to repairs and in-water performance analysis.
Together, Sting Ray and Spearfish give British aircraft, surface ships and submarines complementary options for detecting, deterring and defeating hostile underwater forces. Sting Ray allows aviation and surface units to respond rapidly to submarine contacts, while Spearfish gives Royal Navy submarines a powerful offensive and defensive capability against submerged and surface threats. Sustaining both weapons therefore protects more than two separate inventories: it preserves a connected engagement architecture across the Navy’s aviation, surface and submarine forces. This layered structure is strategically important because undersea warfare is defined by concealment, limited warning and the difficulty of locating a threat before it can endanger warships, commercial shipping or critical maritime activity.
The strategic value of the contract lies as much in weapon availability as in technical performance. A torpedo undergoing repair, awaiting certification or lacking configuration support cannot contribute to an operational deployment, regardless of its designed capability. Reliable maintenance, technical assurance, spare-parts provision and specialist engineering capacity are therefore operational components of deterrence rather than secondary logistical functions. The UK Government has warned that without torpedoes, Britain’s ability to defend its waters, protect trade routes and maintain its nuclear deterrent would be at risk. Rear Admiral Matt Stratton, the Royal Navy’s Director Naval Acquisition, described the extension as a critical enabler of operational readiness that directly supports the UK’s Continuous At Sea Deterrent. By retaining sovereign expertise across several British regions, the award also reduces the risk of losing highly specialised skills that would be costly and time-consuming to regenerate during a future crisis.
The £135 million contract secures far more than routine maintenance. It preserves the industrial, technical and logistical foundations that make Britain’s torpedo force operationally credible. By keeping Sting Ray and Spearfish available to aircraft, surface ships and submarines, the programme strengthens anti-submarine warfare, protects maritime access and supports the Royal Navy’s most strategically important missions.
