U.S. and Philippine Marines Link Hermes Drones to BrahMos Strikes Against Simulated Chinese Warships.
US and Philippine Marines rehearsed a drone-enabled BrahMos strike against a simulated Chinese naval group in northern Luzon, linking aerial surveillance with coastal missile targeting. The exercise advances a distributed maritime-denial network that could complicate Chinese naval operations across the South China Sea and Luzon Strait.
The training paired Philippine Air Force Hermes drone tracks with targeting procedures for road-mobile BrahMos anti-ship batteries against a formation representing two Type 052D destroyers, a Type 054A frigate and a Type 901 support ship. The concept is intended to shorten the sensor-to-shooter cycle while allowing Philippine forces to disperse launchers across the archipelago and contest key maritime approaches without relying on a comparable surface fleet.

The scenario uses a clearly defined naval formation. Planners represent two Type 052D guided-missile destroyers, one Type 054A frigate, and one Type 901 fast combat support ship, all currently operated by the People's Liberation Army Navy. Philippine Air Force Hermes drones provide the tracks used to follow the simulated vessels. US and Philippine teams then convert this information into targeting data for a BrahMos strike, including target identification, track maintenance, weapon assignment, and engagement timing. The selection of identifiable Chinese platforms gives the training a more specific operational context than an exercise based on generic targets.
According to official US Marine Corps imagery published on September 1, 2026, through the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, personnel from Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company Detachment North of Marine Rotational Force Southeast Asia worked alongside the Philippine Coastal Defense Regiment at Camp Bojeador on maritime targeting procedures. The official release confirms that the activity supports the Philippines' Archipelagic Coastal Defense Concept and is intended to improve interoperability between the two forces. Additional information published by USNI News on September 8, based on those images and details provided by Marine Rotational Force Southeast Asia, identifies the Hermes drones, the BrahMos missile, and the exact composition of the simulated Chinese naval group.
The BrahMos provides the strike component of this architecture. The Philippines became the first export customer for the missile jointly developed by India and Russia in 2022 under a contract valued at approximately $375 million for three coastal defense batteries. The Philippine configuration reaches a speed close to Mach 3 and carries a warhead of about 200 kg. Its velocity reduces the reaction time available to a targeted vessel for detection and interception. Road-mobile launchers also allow the batteries to move between firing positions, an important feature in an island environment where survivability depends on dispersion and on limiting exposure to hostile reconnaissance.
The surveillance component remains equally important. USNI News reports that planners used Philippine Air Force Hermes drones to track the opposing formation, although the specific variant and sensor configuration were not publicly identified. In an actual engagement, the nominal range of an anti-ship missile has limited value if the target's position, course and speed cannot be updated with sufficient accuracy. Track continuity, transmission latency, resistance to electronic warfare and communications security therefore become central elements of the engagement process.
This combination gives the Philippines a means of contesting maritime areas without directly matching the size of China's surface fleet. Mobile batteries can exploit the geography of Luzon to cover several approaches, fire and then relocate before a possible counterstrike. Northern Luzon faces the Luzon Strait, a major passage between the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea, while other positions can cover waters near Scarborough Shoal. Such dispersion complicates adversary planning, but it also creates requirements for logistics, reloading, communications and the protection of units after launch.
By combining Philippine missiles, aerial surveillance and US expertise in fires coordination, Manila is gradually developing a maritime denial architecture that could affect Chinese naval movements in the South China Sea and around the Luzon Strait. This evolution also brings Philippine defense arrangements closer to US concepts for distributed forces operating along the first island chain. For Beijing, it adds further potential threats that must be considered in naval planning around Taiwan and contested waters. For Washington and Manila, the central challenge is to make this targeting chain sufficiently fast, mobile and resilient to remain credible in an environment shaped by electronic warfare, persistent surveillance and the risk of regional escalation.
