U.S. Marines Demonstrate Rapid HIMARS Rocket Artillery Insertion Capability in Japan.


U.S. Marines demonstrated the ability to rapidly airlift and deploy a HIMARS launcher in Japan during Typhoon Crossbow, according to imagery released by DVIDS on September 17, 2026. The HIRAIN operation showed how KC-130J transport aircraft can reposition long-range rocket artillery across the Western Pacific, giving dispersed Marine forces greater mobility and flexibility.

The exercise validated a sequence in which Marines seize key terrain, insert HIMARS, engage a target and quickly withdraw the launcher to a secure location. This shoot-and-move approach can reduce exposure to enemy detection and counterfire while allowing U.S. forces to project long-range fires from temporary positions across the Indo-Pacific.

On September 17, 2026, the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) released imagery highlighting a U.S. Marine Corps High Mobility Artillery Rocket System Rapid Infiltration, or HIRAIN, conducted in Japan during Typhoon Crossbow. Marines from 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division worked alongside Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 (VMGR-152), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, to move a HIMARS launcher aboard a KC-130J Super Hercules. The operation demonstrated how Marine aviation and long-range ground fires can be combined to rapidly position combat power across geographically dispersed locations. In the strategically important Western Pacific, that ability reinforces the Marine Corps’ emphasis on mobility, dispersion and expeditionary readiness.

Typhoon Crossbow was designed to validate 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment’s ability to establish an expeditionary advance base through a HIMARS Rapid Infiltration. DVIDS defines the HIRAIN sequence as identifying a target, seizing key terrain, inserting HIMARS, destroying the target and then retrograding to a secure location. During the September 2026 evolution, Marines worked with VMGR-152 to move the launcher aboard a KC-130J Super Hercules, ground-guide and offload the system, and support its rapid employment. DVIDS imagery from the event documents Marines carrying out the operation at locations in Japan, including the movement of HIMARS from the KC-130J as part of the wider rapid-infiltration sequence.

The significance of HIRAIN in Japan extends beyond simply transporting an artillery launcher by aircraft. Japan’s island geography places a premium on forces capable of moving quickly between separated operating locations while avoiding excessive dependence on permanent bases, fixed firing positions or lengthy overland movements. By inserting a HIMARS launcher by air, employing it from an expeditionary position and subsequently withdrawing it, Marine forces can reduce the amount of time a valuable fires asset remains exposed at any single location. This closely supports the Marine Corps’ broader approach to Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations, in which relatively small and mobile forces can establish temporary positions, contribute long-range precision fires and support naval operations across contested maritime terrain. Previous Marine training in Japan has likewise emphasized dispersed forces, low-signature sustainment and long-range fires from expeditionary advanced bases.

Central to that mobility is the KC-130J Super Hercules, which gives the Marine Corps considerably more than a conventional transport capability. VMGR-152, based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, is tasked with providing aerial refueling and assault support during expeditionary, joint and combined operations, while also transporting personnel, equipment and supplies. During a HIRAIN mission, that transport capacity creates a direct bridge between Marine aviation and ground-based long-range fires. Instead of restricting a HIMARS launcher to the distance it can cover by road, the KC-130J allows the artillery system to be repositioned through the air, potentially opening access to dispersed operating locations separated by significant stretches of land and sea. The aircraft therefore acts as the mobility enabler that transforms HIMARS from a highly mobile ground launcher into an air-deployable expeditionary fires capability.

The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System provides the striking power at the center of the concept. HIMARS combines long-range precision fires with a mobile wheeled launcher capable of rapidly moving after completing its mission. Within a HIRAIN operation, however, mobility becomes as important as firepower itself: a launcher can be inserted, brought into position, complete its assigned firing sequence and then begin retrograding toward a more secure location. This “move, employ and displace” approach is particularly relevant to distributed operations, where remaining in a predictable firing position for extended periods can increase vulnerability. By combining HIMARS with tactical aviation, the Marines expand the number of locations from which long-range fires can potentially be generated while complicating an opposing force’s ability to anticipate where the launcher will operate next.

Typhoon Crossbow also underscores that HIRAIN is ultimately a demonstration of Marine integration rather than of a single weapon system. Moving a HIMARS aboard a KC-130J, safely unloading and ground-guiding the launcher, establishing the necessary communications, coordinating targeting and firing procedures, and preparing the force to withdraw requires close coordination between artillery Marines, aircrews, ground personnel, communications specialists and planners. That integration reflects the professionalism and expeditionary discipline of the Marines involved. It also builds on experience already developed by 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines and VMGR-152: in 2020, the units conducted an approximately 800-mile HIRAIN from Okinawa to Iwo To, where a HIMARS was transported aboard a KC-130J, moved to a firing point, engaged a simulated target and was loaded back onto the aircraft. The Marine Corps described that earlier operation as demonstrating the ability of 3rd Marine Division and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing to deploy long-range precision-fire assets across a vast region in support of distributed littoral operations.

From a wider strategic perspective, repeatedly rehearsing this capability in Japan gives U.S. commanders another method of generating combat power across a geographically dispersed theater. HIRAIN can shorten the time required to reposition a launcher over long distances, enable temporary firing positions and reduce reliance on a small number of predictable operating locations. The concept also illustrates the increasingly close relationship between aviation, sensors, communications and ground-based precision fires within Marine expeditionary operations. While Typhoon Crossbow itself was a training event, the capability being validated is directly relevant to the Marine Corps’ continuing effort to create highly mobile, distributed forces capable of supporting joint and naval operations across the Indo-Pacific.

The HIRAIN conducted by 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment and VMGR-152 demonstrates how the U.S. Marine Corps is turning the combination of HIMARS firepower and KC-130J mobility into a repeatable expeditionary capability. In Japan’s demanding island environment, the ability to rapidly insert long-range fires, conduct a mission and withdraw provides commanders with greater flexibility while reducing dependence on fixed positions. More importantly, the operation showcased the skill, coordination and readiness of the Marines who make that capability possible. By integrating aviation, artillery and expeditionary maneuver, 3rd Marine Division and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing continue to demonstrate the adaptability and operational professionalism expected of U.S. Marines operating at the forward edge of the Indo-Pacific.
