Defender returns to UK military market with Wolf Series II variants for Light Mobility Vehicle bid.


Defender unveiled three Wolf Series II variants for the UK Ministry of Defence Light Mobility Vehicle programme, introducing Tactical Mobility Vehicle, Mono-Tactical Mobility Vehicle and Utility Vehicle configurations. The move positions the new Defender Defence Division for the British light mobility requirement while creating a platform family intended for NATO defence customers.

The three vehicles were presented at Millbrook during DVD 2026 and are based on the Wolf Series II concept developed for the UK military mobility market. Defender plans to use the variants as the first elements of a broader offer for British requirements and potential NATO sales.

The relevance of the announcement goes beyond the introduction of three additional configurations. The LMV programme is intended to renew part of Britain’s light mobility fleet around a common platform that can be adapted to several roles. Defender therefore presents Wolf Series II not simply as a successor to previous military Land Rover vehicles, but as the potential basis for a broader family intended to meet different requirements across the British armed forces. The company is also positioning the platform for NATO defence organisations alongside its bid for the UK competition.

That approach is already visible across the Wolf Series II family. In addition to the three newly revealed variants, Defender has developed General Purpose Vehicle, Command and Control Vehicle and Battlefield Ambulance configurations. The objective is to use the same underlying architecture across several mission sets rather than relying on separate vehicle families. For military operators, such commonality can reduce maintenance and training requirements while allowing individual configurations to be adapted to different operational tasks.

Wolf Series II is based on Defender’s D7x architecture and uses monocoque construction instead of the separate chassis layout associated with earlier military generations. Defender states that the structure provides torsional rigidity of 29 kNm per degree and says the platform underwent more than 62,000 engineering sign-off tests. The range uses a six-cylinder diesel engine producing 250 bhp and 576 Nm of torque with NATO-compatible fuel capability. Ground clearance reaches 293 mm, while the vehicles can ford water up to 900 mm deep and have a stated range of 938 km on one tank.

The different configurations use these common characteristics to address separate mobility requirements. The Mono Tactical Mobility Vehicle is based on the Defender 110 and carries four occupants with a payload of 1,000 kg. It can tow up to 3,500 kg with a braked trailer. The Utility Vehicle uses the longer Defender 130 platform and increases payload capacity to 2,000 kg while retaining a 3,000 kg braked towing capacity. Both use an air and coil suspension arrangement and are compatible with internal transport aboard a CH-47 helicopter.
