Greece Plans €3 Billion Israeli Air Defense Missile Shield to Reinforce NATO’s Southeastern Flank.
Greece is expected to sign agreements with Israel worth about €3 billion ($3.5 billion) for a new multi-layer air and missile defense architecture built around Israeli systems including David’s Sling, BARAK MX and SPYDER, according to two security sources cited by Reuters on August 31, 2026. The planned network would significantly strengthen Greece’s ability to counter drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles while reinforcing NATO’s southeastern flank and protecting allied bases, airspace and critical infrastructure across the Eastern Mediterranean.
The package is expected to combine three missile-defense layers with new radar systems and a separate counter-drone capability, creating a more integrated defensive shield against increasingly complex aerial attacks. For NATO, the program could improve regional early warning, resilience and deterrence along a strategically important corridor linking the Balkans, the Black Sea approaches and the eastern Mediterranean.

The agreements are expected to be signed with Israel’s SIBAT (International Defense Cooperation Directorate of the Israeli Ministry of Defense) and MAFAT's defense research and development directorate after Greece’s security council approves them, Reuters reported. The procurement marks a major step in Athens’ Achilles Shield program, which aims to reorganize Greek air defenses around more modern sensors, interceptors, and command-and-control networks rather than continuing to rely on a heterogeneous inventory of U.S., European, and Russian-origin weapons accumulated over several decades.
Greece currently fields U.S. Patriot PAC-2 and Russian S-300PMU1 systems for longer-range air defense, supported at shorter distances by French Crotale NG, Russian Tor-M1 and other surface-to-air missile systems. Although this inventory provides several engagement layers, its diversity creates challenges in logistics, maintenance, software support and interoperability, particularly as the Hellenic Armed Forces increasingly transition toward NATO-compatible communications and combat systems. Achilles Shield is therefore important not only because it adds newer missiles, but because it is intended to create a more coherent defensive network that can detect, classify, and engage multiple types of aerial threats within the same operational picture.
The Israeli package has been associated with Rafael’s SPYDER family for short-range defense, Israel Aerospace Industries’ BARAK MX for medium and extended-range engagements, and Rafael’s David’s Sling for the upper defensive layer, although the final configuration and quantities will depend on the agreements signed. SPYDER would provide a mobile response against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, while BARAK MX offers a modular family of vertically launched interceptors designed to cover several engagement ranges, including extended-range variants reportedly reaching about 150 km. This combination would allow Greek forces to create overlapping defensive zones around air bases, naval installations, command centers, and critical infrastructure, while increasing opportunities to intercept incoming threats before they reach their targets.
David’s Sling could deliver the most significant improvement against advanced missile threats. Developed by Rafael with U.S. involvement, the system uses the Stunner interceptor and was designed to counter demanding targets, including tactical ballistic missiles, large-caliber rockets, and cruise missiles, at greater distances than conventional point-defense weapons. Its introduction would also support Greece’s gradual movement away from Russian-origin air-defense equipment, particularly as sustaining S-300PMU1 and Tor-M1 systems becomes increasingly complicated within a force structure that is being modernized around Western aircraft, sensors, communications and weapons.
The operational value of the new architecture will depend heavily on how effectively Greece connects its radars, command networks and missile batteries. A modern integrated air-defense system allows commanders to combine sensor tracks from different locations, assign targets by priority, and select the most appropriate interceptor for each threat, rather than using expensive long-range missiles against every incoming object. This has become critical in recent conflicts, where coordinated attacks involving one-way attack drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles can place intense pressure on air-defense units and rapidly deplete interceptor inventories.
The separate counter-drone agreement reported by Reuters therefore carries considerable operational significance. Dedicated counter-unmanned aerial systems can deal with reconnaissance drones and lower-cost one-way attack aircraft without forcing Greek forces to expend high-value surface-to-air missiles intended for faster or more dangerous targets. Integrating such systems beneath SPYDER, BARAK MX, Patriot and David’s Sling would give Achilles Shield a more sustainable layered structure and improve resistance to saturation attacks designed to overwhelm defensive networks through sheer numbers.
For NATO, the new Greek air-defense architecture could strengthen coverage across the alliance’s southeastern flank and better protect air bases, ports, logistics hubs, and reinforcement routes in the eastern Mediterranean. If connected effectively with NATO air-surveillance and command networks, Greek radars and interceptors could contribute additional sensor coverage, more engagement opportunities and greater resilience against cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and large-scale drone attacks. This would be particularly relevant during a regional crisis, when allied aircraft, naval forces and reinforcements moving through Greece would depend on protected infrastructure and a survivable air-defense network.
The NATO value also lies in force interoperability and burden sharing. Replacing or reducing dependence on Russian-origin S-300PMU1 and Tor-M1 systems would simplify Greece’s integration with Western communications, identification and battle-management standards, while modern Israeli systems could complement existing Patriot defenses rather than operating as isolated batteries. In practical terms, Achilles Shield could give NATO another dense defensive node in the eastern Mediterranean, helping distribute air- and missile-defense responsibilities across more allied territory instead of concentrating them around a limited number of high-end batteries.
Achilles Shield forms part of a much wider Greek military modernization effort expected to total about €28 billion through 2036. Athens is simultaneously preparing to introduce up to 40 U.S.-built F-35A fighters, continuing the modernization of its F-16 fleet and strengthening the Hellenic Navy with new-generation frigates, creating the potential for a broader network of airborne, maritime and ground-based sensors. The F-35 is particularly relevant because its advanced sensors and secure data links could broaden situational awareness, while modern frigates can extend radar coverage over the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean.
The industrial dimension will also shape the program's long-term effectiveness because a national air-defense architecture requires more than delivering missile batteries. Greece will need assured access to spare parts, interceptor stocks, software updates, maintenance infrastructure and technical support throughout the 2030s, making local industrial participation and technology access important for operational availability during prolonged crises. The agreement would also deepen defense cooperation between Greece and Israel, giving Athens access to air- and missile-defense systems developed around threats that have become increasingly relevant to European armed forces.
For Greece itself, the strategic value of Achilles Shield will ultimately depend less on the advertised range of any single interceptor than on the ability to connect SPYDER, BARAK MX, David’s Sling, existing Patriot batteries, counter-drone equipment and national radar assets into one coordinated defensive network. If that integration is achieved, the €3 billion Israeli agreements could mark Greece’s transition from a fragmented collection of legacy air-defense batteries toward a layered national architecture designed to confront mass drones, low-flying cruise missiles and increasingly sophisticated ballistic missiles, while at the same time reinforcing NATO’s wider integrated air and missile defense posture in southeastern Europe.
