The Zuzana 2 is a state-of-the-art artillery system developed and manufactured by Slovak defense company KONŠTRUKTA – Defence. It represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the original Zuzana howitzer. Equipped with a 155mm L52 caliber gun, the Zuzana 2 is fully compliant with NATO standards. It offers a firing range of up to 41 kilometers with standard ammunition and can reach up to 50 kilometers with rocket-assisted projectiles. Designed for both firepower and mobility, the howitzer is mounted on a robust Tatra 8x8 chassis, enabling rapid deployment across a wide variety of terrains.

What sets the Zuzana 2 apart is its advanced automation and fire control technology. The system boasts a fully automated loading process and modern fire control system, which enables high firing accuracy and efficiency while minimizing crew exposure. Capable of delivering intense, sustained firepower with a reduced crew, the Zuzana 2 is well-suited for the dynamic combat scenarios faced by Ukrainian forces.

The provision of Zuzana 2 howitzers to Ukraine is the result of a trilateral agreement signed between Germany, Denmark, and Norway in 2022. Under the terms of the agreement, the three countries jointly financed the production of 16 units for Ukraine. The total value of the agreement is estimated at around €92 million. This financing model represents a strategic example of collaborative defense procurement among NATO allies, leveraging industrial capacities in Slovakia to rapidly equip Ukraine with modern artillery systems.

Germany, Denmark, and Norway have committed to sharing the financial burden to expedite delivery schedules and ensure Ukraine receives the support it urgently needs. The three governments coordinated closely with the Slovak defense industry to prioritize the production of these systems for immediate transfer to the frontlines. This approach has proven successful in delivering cutting-edge military hardware on a compressed timeline—an increasingly vital capability given the evolving requirements of the battlefield.

The trilateral project has been hailed as a success in both military and political terms. For Ukraine, the Zuzana 2 systems have provided critical long-range artillery capabilities, enabling more effective counter-battery operations and supporting maneuver warfare tactics. For the contributing nations, the project showcases the benefits of coordinated defense initiatives that combine resources, expertise, and manufacturing capabilities to deliver strategic results in a timely manner.

As of April 2025, nine of the 16 contracted Zuzana 2 systems have been delivered to Ukraine. The remaining seven are scheduled to arrive in successive batches throughout the year, further reinforcing Ukraine’s artillery capabilities. The timely and effective execution of this trilateral defense aid initiative underlines the unwavering support of European allies for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also setting a precedent for future collaborative defense programs in the region.
