U.S. Air Force Awards $27.8M for Two Mira Satellites to Boost Space Threat Tracking.
The U.S. Air Force is expanding its ability to monitor and respond to threats in orbit with a $27.77 million contract awarded to Impulse Space for two additional Mira maneuverable spacecraft, the Pentagon announced on July 29, 2026. The move strengthens U.S. space domain awareness by adding agile satellites capable of tracking and characterizing objects in low Earth orbit, where military competition is intensifying.
The new Mira spacecraft will carry U.S. government payloads dedicated to surveillance missions, enhancing the Space Force's capacity to detect, monitor, and assess activities across an increasingly contested orbital environment. The award also reflects the growing reliance on maneuverable commercial platforms to improve space resilience, operational flexibility, and deterrence against emerging counterspace threats.

The additional Mira spacecraft will host U.S. government-furnished payloads dedicated to monitoring and characterizing activities in low Earth orbit, where the rapid expansion of Chinese and Russian military space capabilities has elevated space domain awareness to one of the U.S. Space Force's highest operational priorities. The procurement reflects continued investment in maneuverable spacecraft capable of supporting responsive surveillance missions rather than relying solely on traditional satellites operating in fixed orbital trajectories.
Although awarded under the U.S. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III program, the contract represents a transition from technology development to operational procurement. Phase III awards are reserved for mature technologies that have demonstrated military value, making the purchase of two additional Mira spacecraft an indication of the U.S. Space Force's confidence in the system as an operational capability rather than an experimental project.
Impulse Space developed Mira as a maneuverable spacecraft capable of transporting payloads after launch, performing orbital transfers, hosting government or commercial payloads, and executing repeated orbital maneuvers throughout a mission. Powered by an onboard propulsion system and autonomous guidance software, the spacecraft can reposition payloads between operational orbits and adapt to changing mission requirements, providing flexibility unavailable with conventional satellites once deployed.
This capability supports a significant shift in U.S. military space operations. Traditionally, national security satellites have been designed to remain within predetermined orbital positions for most of their operational lives. While highly capable, these spacecraft offer limited flexibility to respond to rapidly evolving operational situations. Maneuverable spacecraft such as Mira introduce a more agile concept of operations by allowing sensors to be repositioned after launch, enabling closer observation of objects of interest, improved orbital coverage, and more responsive intelligence collection.
The contract's primary mission—space domain awareness—has become central to maintaining U.S. freedom of action in space. SDA encompasses the detection, tracking, identification, and characterization of satellites and other objects operating in orbit, providing U.S. military commanders with the information needed to safeguard critical national security space assets and assess potentially hostile activities. As commercial constellations proliferate and military competition in orbit intensifies, persistent awareness has become as essential in space as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance are on the battlefield.
The strategic urgency of this mission has grown alongside advances by China and Russia. Both countries have invested heavily in spacecraft capable of conducting complex orbital maneuvers, close-proximity operations, rendezvous, and satellite inspection missions. These activities have increased concerns among U.S. defense planners regarding the ability to monitor spacecraft that can alter their trajectories and operate near sensitive national security satellites. Deploying maneuverable spacecraft equipped with dedicated surveillance payloads allows the U.S. Space Force to observe such activities from advantageous orbital positions while responding more rapidly to emerging situations.
The acquisition also supports the U.S. Space Force's broader objective of building a more resilient and responsive military space architecture. Rather than concentrating capabilities on a limited number of large spacecraft, the service is pursuing a more distributed constellation of maneuverable systems that can adapt to changing operational conditions, complicate adversary planning, and improve survivability during potential conflicts extending into the space domain.
For Impulse Space, the follow-on procurement represents an important milestone in the company's emergence as a supplier of operational capabilities for the U.S. national security space sector. Repeat procurement is often a stronger indicator of military confidence than an initial development award, demonstrating that the technology has progressed beyond prototype evaluation into sustained operational use. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the award was issued as Modification P00010 to existing contract FA8809-25-C-B001 under the SBIR Phase III program.
Beyond the procurement itself, the contract illustrates the U.S. Space Force's evolving approach to space superiority. As orbital competition intensifies, future military advantage will increasingly depend not only on placing satellites into orbit but also on the ability to maneuver them, rapidly reposition sensors, and maintain persistent awareness of adversary activities. The continued expansion of the Mira fleet reflects this doctrinal shift toward agile spacecraft that enhance U.S. military space operations and strengthen deterrence in an increasingly contested low Earth orbit environment.
