Bulgaria Clears U.S. KC-135 Tankers Deployment at Bezmer Base to Support Middle East Operations.


Bulgaria's Parliament approved the temporary deployment of up to eight U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft at Bezmer Air Base on July 22, strengthening U.S. air mobility and refueling capabilities for operations supporting the Middle East. The move expands the U.S. Air Force's operational reach from southeastern Europe while reinforcing NATO's role as a strategic logistics hub.

Under the authorization, up to 250 U.S. military personnel, support equipment, and KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft may operate from Bezmer Air Base between July 24 and October 1, 2026. According to the Bulgarian News Agency, the deployment establishes a temporary U.S. aerial refueling presence in Bulgaria, enabling more flexible support for ongoing missions in the Middle East while improving operational responsiveness across Europe and adjacent theaters.

Bulgarian lawmakers approved the proposal by 136 votes to 13, with two abstentions. The parliamentary decision followed a formal request from the U.S. Embassy and requires no additional national authorization. Bezmer is one of the facilities made available for joint use under the 2006 Defense Cooperation Agreement between Bulgaria and the United States. Any American use of the base for a purpose not previously covered by the agreement requires parliamentary approval.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated before the vote that combat operations in the Middle East would not be conducted from Bulgarian territory. He described the planned KC-135 presence as a logistical deployment intended exclusively to support aerial refueling missions outside Bulgarian airspace. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov also said that Sofia had obtained U.S. guarantees intended to limit risks to Bulgarian national security.

The authorization permits the deployment of up to eight aircraft but does not confirm that all eight KC-135s have already arrived at Bezmer. The United States has also not publicly identified the unit that would provide the aircraft or specified the exact number expected to operate from the base. This distinction is important because the parliamentary decision creates the legal framework for the deployment without confirming its final operational composition.

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker provides the core aerial refueling capability of the U.S. Air Force and can support Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and allied aircraft. According to an official U.S. Air Force Reserve fact sheet, the KC-135 can transfer as much as 200,000 pounds, or approximately 90,700 kilograms, of fuel. It primarily refuels aircraft through a flying boom but can also use a drogue adapter for aircraft equipped with probe-type refueling systems.

This compatibility allows the KC-135 to support a broad range of combat and support aircraft, including U.S. Air Force fighters and bombers as well as U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and allied platforms. The tanker can therefore extend aircraft range, increase time on station, support longer strike or patrol routes, and reduce dependence on airfields located closer to the operational area. It can also transport personnel and cargo, with a maximum cargo capacity of approximately 83,000 pounds, depending on its fuel configuration.

Bezmer Air Base is located approximately 260 kilometers southeast of Sofia and relatively close to Bulgaria’s borders with Turkey and Greece. Its location gives U.S. aircraft access to routes leading toward the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East while remaining outside the immediate operational theater. From this position, KC-135s could join established tanker tracks after leaving Bulgarian airspace and refuel aircraft operating from other European bases, carriers, or more distant facilities.

The deployment comes as the United States continues military operations involving Iran and faces political resistance from some European governments concerning the use of their territory or bases. Bulgarian officials have consequently emphasized the logistical nature of the mission and the absence of planned combat sorties from Bezmer. Iran nevertheless warned Bulgaria against allowing its territory to facilitate U.S. military action, illustrating the diplomatic sensitivity surrounding tanker support even when the aircraft are not directly carrying weapons.

Aerial refueling remains a central component of long-range air operations because it connects geographically dispersed bases with combat aircraft operating over distant theaters. A temporary force of up to eight KC-135s could sustain several refueling missions per day, depending on aircraft availability, crew rotations, maintenance requirements, and the distance to assigned tanker tracks. The operational effect would be greater endurance for receiving aircraft and additional flexibility in selecting routes, bases, and mission timings.

This deployment comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, following continued U.S. military operations targeting Iranian nuclear and military capabilities and a series of strikes and retaliatory threats that have intensified in recent weeks. Against this backdrop, the reinforcement of the U.S. aerial refueling network reflects Washington's determination to sustain long-range air operations across the Middle East while relying on the infrastructure of allied countries in Europe.
