US launches 9th wave of night strikes against Iran to restore Strait of Hormuz shipping.


U.S. Central Command executed a three-hour wave of airstrikes against Iranian military installations across southern Iran on July 20, 2026, marking the ninth consecutive night of offensive operations. The operation targeted command centers, air defense positions, coastal surveillance nodes, and drone launch sites to dismantle the operational chain coordinating attacks on merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. By degrading integrated radar networks and mobile launch assets, the strikes aim to restore maritime security and enforce the reinstated U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The ninth night of CENTCOM strikes forms part of a broader air-maritime effort that previously engaged over 140 Iranian military targets and enforced a blockade that redirected six commercial vessels and disabled one by July 19. Iranian counter-strikes involving ballistic missiles and attack drones across Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, and Bahrain have killed 17 U.S. service members to date while elevating Brent crude oil prices past $90 per barrel.

On July 20, 2026, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) began a three-hour wave of strikes against Iran, marking the ninth consecutive night of operations of a campaign centered on securing commercial access to the Strait of Hormuz. The target set included Iranian military command centers, integrated air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime forces, missile and drone launch positions, as well as communications networks used to coordinate attacks on merchant vessels and civilian crews. The operation occurred after the June cessation arrangement had broken down and after Washington reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports, as part of a wider maritime interdiction effort. Earlier attack cycles had struck more than 140 Iranian military objectives, while the first blockade conducted from April 13 to June 18 redirected more than 140 vessels and disabled nine that attempted to pass through the restricted area.

In retaliation, Iran continues launching missiles and attack drones against U.S. positions and Gulf states, leaving Washington engaged simultaneously in offensive operations over Iran, air and missile defense across several host countries, and armed enforcement at sea. Conducting a new target cycle every night requires surveillance aircraft, satellites, electronic intelligence systems and other sensors to identify mobile launchers, detect radar emissions, map communications activity and verify whether previously struck facilities have resumed operations. Targeting teams must then distinguish active military equipment from decoys, abandoned positions and civilian traffic before assigning aircraft and weapons, followed by battle damage assessment and preparation of the next target list.

A three-hour engagement window does not represent only three hours of military activity, since tanker support, airborne command and control, combat air patrols, electronic warfare, search-and-rescue coverage and post-strike analysis extend the cycle well beyond the period in which weapons are released. Repeating that process for nine nights forces Iranian units to move launchers, ammunition and command posts during hours of darkness, break larger formations into smaller elements and reduce radio transmissions to avoid detection. These measures improve Iran's survivability but also slow decision-making, complicate maintenance and increase the time required to prepare coordinated missile or drone salvos. The composition of the target set indicates that the CENTCOM is attacking the operational chain behind Iranian strikes rather than concentrating only on the weapon at the point of launch.

Command centers are needed to receive surveillance information, select targets, allocate weapons, and synchronize missile, drone, and naval units. Communications nodes connect those headquarters to mobile launch batteries, coastal observation posts and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval formations, while radar sites provide warning of approaching aircraft and track commercial and military vessels entering the Gulf. Attacks on air defense positions reduce the ability of surface-to-air missile units and anti-aircraft systems to contest later strike packages, creating a cumulative effect in which each night's suppression facilitates the next. Coastal facilities around Bandar Abbas, Jask, Bushehr, Konarak, Chabahar, Abu Musa and Greater Tunb support overlapping radar coverage, anti-ship missile deployment, drone operations, naval basing and command of the approaches to Hormuz.

Striking these locations can reduce the quality and speed of Iran's targeting process, but it cannot by itself eliminate all of Iran's mobile missile launchers, naval mines, fast attack craft, small submarines or drones dispersed away from these permanent bases. The Strait of Hormuz remains the campaign's operational center because its geography allows Iran to threaten a large volume of shipping with relatively short-range systems. The waterway is approximately 34 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, while internationally used traffic lanes constrain inbound and outbound vessels to predictable routes separated by a buffer zone. Before the war, approximately 20 percent of global oil traffic passed through the strait, together with a substantial portion of liquefied natural gas exported from Qatar. Large tankers travel slowly, have limited maneuverability in confined waters, and cannot rapidly evade missiles, drones, mines, or armed small craft.



For instance, on July 20, a vessel was reported burning and adrift eight nautical miles, or 14.8 kilometers, northwest of Kumzar, Oman, after being struck by an unidentified projectile; its crew abandoned the ship and was recovered by a tug. Iran also claimed that two tankers using the route close to Oman's coast had exploded and stopped moving after disregarding Iranian navigation instructions. These incidents show that reopening the strait requires more for the US than destroying fixed coastal positions because Iran can impose risk with relatively small numbers of mobile weapons while commercial operators respond to perceived danger by delaying voyages, changing routes, or refusing transit. The air campaign is being combined with an increasingly coercive naval enforcement.

By July 19, the CENTCOM had redirected six commercial vessels and disabled one under the renewed blockade, compared with five diversions reported one day earlier. The USS John Finn, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, was identified as supporting enforcement operations, while the USS Donald Cook operated in the Arabian Sea with an embarked MH-60S Seahawk helicopter. The MH-60S can investigate contacts beyond the destroyer's radar horizon, observe deck activity, relay imagery, transport boarding personnel and provide armed overwatch. Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded the tanker M/T Wen Yao to verify its identity, cargo, ownership, destination and compliance.

In an earlier action near Kharg Island on July 15, U.S. forces disabled the tanker M/T Belma with Hellfire missiles directed at its smokestack, an aiming point selected to stop propulsion while reducing the probability of penetrating the cargo tanks and causing a major oil spill. This combination of diversion, boarding and selective disabling establishes escalating levels of force: compliant vessels change course, suspect vessels are inspected, and ships refusing instructions can be immobilized. Iran's response demonstrates that the degradation of its coastal military infrastructure has not yet prevented Tehran from generating lethal effects across the region. A July 17 Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack in Jordan killed two U.S. service members and left another missing, after which unidentified remains were recovered at the site.

On July 18, a third U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, and another suffered a minor injury. These losses raised confirmed U.S. military fatalities in the nearly five-month conflict to 17. Iranian attacks also triggered missile interceptions over Jordan, including three missiles engaged on July 19, while fragments fell near Eilat in southern Israel. Kuwait activated air defenses against hostile drones and reported attacks on a power generation and desalination facility for a second consecutive day, forcing the precautionary disconnection of generating units. Bahrain sounded warning sirens, instructed residents to seek shelter, and hosted a U.S. security warning concerning potential Iranian attacks against locations in central Manama, where the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet is located.

The distribution of these attacks across Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain forces the United States and its partners to protect a network of bases, ports, airfields and civilian infrastructure extending more than 1,500 kilometers from the central Gulf to the Levant. The central military question is not whether U.S. strikes can destroy individual Iranian facilities, but whether their destruction is occurring faster than Iran can disperse, repair and regenerate its attack network. Fixed radars, headquarters, storage buildings and launch pads are comparatively vulnerable once located, but mobile missile launchers and truck-mounted drone systems can operate from roads, tunnels, industrial compounds and concealed firing positions.



Iran was assessed earlier in the conflict to retain approximately 1,000 missiles in underground storage along with thousands of drones, providing a stockpile large enough to absorb substantial losses while continuing lower-volume attacks. Underground complexes protect missiles, warheads and launch equipment from fragmentation and near misses, although entrances, ventilation systems, power supplies and transportation links remain vulnerable. Repeated strikes against bridges, tunnels, roads and rail connections can slow movement between storage areas and launch zones, but these attacks also expand the target set, but consume weapons that might otherwise be assigned to air defenses or launch systems.

The campaign therefore depends on persistent surveillance and rapid engagement of fleeting targets, while Iran can preserve combat power by reducing salvo size, extending intervals between launches and using inexpensive drones to consume regional interceptor stocks. The economic effects provide measurable evidence that neither side needs to close the strait physically to impose strategic costs. Brent crude futures increased by $2.75, or 3.1%, to $90.85 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate rose by $2.56, also 3.1%, to $85.05. Brent had gained nearly 16% during the preceding week, its largest weekly increase since April, and European benchmark natural gas prices reached their highest closing level since March.

U.S. gasoline prices approached $4 per gallon, approximately 34% above their prewar level, while diesel reached $5.11 per gallon, an increase of roughly 36%. Ryanair reported a 34% year-on-year fall in quarterly profit to €538 million as operating costs rose 11%, partly because its unhedged fuel costs doubled; the airline also reduced average fares by 6% as the conflict weakened demand and increased concern over European jet fuel availability. These figures show how attacks on a small number of vessels, combined with uncertainty over Gulf production and damaged regional energy facilities, can affect the global aviation, road transport, inflation and industrial costs without a complete interruption of exports. 

Nine consecutive nights of U.S. strikes, more than 140 Iranian military objectives attacked during earlier phases, a reinstated port blockade, six vessels redirected and one disabled by July 19 indicate that Washington is conducting an integrated air-maritime campaign rather than a temporary retaliatory operation. The immediate military aim is to reduce the number, frequency and coordination of Iranian attacks sufficiently for commercial traffic to resume, but the operational standard for success is demanding. Iran does not need continuous control of the Strait of Hormuz; it needs only enough surviving missiles, drones, mines or small craft to maintain a credible probability of loss for tankers and their insurers.

The United States, by contrast, must sustain surveillance across a large maritime and coastal area, defend bases in several countries, escort or monitor commercial traffic, enforce the blockade and repeatedly strike regenerated targets. Iran's continued ability to kill U.S. personnel, attack regional infrastructure and threaten vessels continuously since February 28, 2026, indicates that its attack network has been damaged but not neutralized. The campaign is therefore becoming a contest between U.S. capacity to locate and destroy dispersed systems and Iran's capacity to preserve sufficient weapons, crews and communications to keep the Gulf commercially hazardous. Its outcome will be measured less by the cumulative number of facilities struck than by vessel transit rates, attack frequency, U.S. and regional casualties, Iranian launch volume, insurance costs and the proportion of Gulf energy exports that can move without military intervention.
