Russia completes acceptance trials of Gibka-S air defense missile

Acceptance trials of Gibka-S mobile air defense missile system for the Ground Forces were completed in late 2019, the Zvezda weekly writes. Gibka-S destroys aircraft at low altitudes and a speed of 400 m/sec. It can also fight airplanes, helicopters and drones. The missiles can destroy troops and engineering fortifications.

A drone attack can become a standard option to destroy advancing military columns. It is too costly to send Tor missile launchers to guard each battalion or company. Pantsir missile-gun system better operates from equipped positions.

It was decided to develop a ground option of 3M-47 antiaircraft complex designed by Altair Institute of Almaz-Antey to defend ground units on the march. The ground option of the seaborne antiaircraft complex created by several research institutes and enterprises was called Gibka-S. It was designed and produced by Kolomna Machine-Building Bureau, GosNIIAS in Moscow, Applied Acoustics Institute in Dubna, Rubin in Penza, Signal in Kovrov, Saratov Hardware Plant, and Ryazan Instrument Manufacturing Plant.

Trials of prototypes of reconnaissance and command vehicles for platoon commander and combat vehicles for antiaircraft shooters confirmed the assigned characteristics. A major advantage of Gibka-S is the remote launch of antiaircraft guided missiles of all modifications of Verba and Igla MANPADS. The vehicle can fire at air targets while moving at 30 km/h. It helps effectively protect troops on the march.

Gibka-S operates in a single tactical command and ensures reconnaissance, tracking and fire at air targets in motion and stationary. The combat air defense vehicle is equipped with a multichannel optical-electronic detection and tracking system and high-speed aiming and remote launch units. Gibka-S comprises a reconnaissance and command vehicle of platoon commander and combat vehicles of antiaircraft units. The former is a mobile command post to operate six latter vehicles and provide communications with superior command. In motion, the command vehicle can maintain communications with combat vehicles at a distance of at least 8 kilometers. Gibka-S is mounted on the undercarriage of the Tiger armored automobile, which makes it useful for the Airborne Forces, marines and commandos.

Garmon 1L122 radar provides around-view monitoring of the airspace and automatically tracks targets. It detects them at a distance of 40 km. Adversary targets are destroyed by Verba and Igla missiles at a distance of six kilometers. Garmon automatically identifies friend or foe and transmits target parameters to the command vehicle. It determines the positioning by data from navigational systems.

Ten new arms are created for the air defense of the troops. They include a prospective mobile antiaircraft Derivatsia-PVO artillery system with a 57mm automatic gun. It has to fight small and super-small drones, and replace the old self-propelled Shilka four-gun system, the Zvezda said.
