US approves new delivery to Ukraine of HIMARS and precision-guided artillery ammunition


According to information published by the United States Department of Defense on October 14, 2022, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announces the authorization of a Presidential Drawdown of security assistance valued at up to $725 million to meet Ukraine's critical security and defense needs.

The new military aid from the United States for Ukraine includes additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 23,000 155mm artillery round, 500 precision-guided 155mm artillery rounds, 5,000 155mm rounds of Remote Anti-Armor Mine (RAAM) Systems, more than 200 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), small arms and more than 2,000,000 rounds of small arms ammunition.

This announcement follows Secretary of Defense Austin's gathering of defense ministers of nearly 50 countries at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels on 12 and 13 October 2022, at which leaders committed to providing additional security assistance.

During this meeting, Germany also announced the recent delivery of the first of four IRIS-T air-defense missile systems committed to Ukraine. Germany also recently announced that it will deliver more MARS II MLRS Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and PzH 2000 155mm self-propelled howitzers.

Spain announced it will provide four HAWK launchers to strengthen Ukraine's air defense while Norway, Germany, and Denmark invested into Slovakia's indigenous production of Zuzana 2 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers.

To meet Ukraine's evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with key capabilities.

In total, the United States has committed more than $18.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since January 2021. Since 2014, the United States has committed more than $20.3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine and approximately $17.6 billion since the beginning of Russia's unprovoked and brutal invasion on February 24, 2022.
