The design of the VP22 is very similar to an armored truck with a crew cabin at the front and the troop's compartment at the rear. The vehicle is based on 6x6 BeiBen Kaijia military truck chassis and is motorized with a turbocharged diesel engine developing 432 hp, coupled to an automatic transmission. It can run at a maximum road speed of 90 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.

The crew cabin and the troop's compartment are protected with armor offering ballistic protection against firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. It also has a V-shaped hull that provides protection against mine blasts and an explosion of IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices).

The crew cabin is fitted with two large bulletproof windows at the front and one single door on each side. The VP22 has a crew of 2 and can accommodate 16 infantrymen at the rear. The infantrymen enter and leave the vehicle through a large hydraulically operated ramp located at the rear of the troop's compartment.
