Kh 101 advanced stealthy long range subsonic cruise missile Russia 925 001

Description

The Kh-101 is a Russian-made advanced stealthy long-range subsonic cruise missile that is launched from a strategic bomber. The missile was developed in the late 1990s by Russia's Tactical Missile Armament Corporation (KTRV). It is designed to strike strategic targets at a range of up to 5,000 kilometers with high accuracy. Overall, the Kh-101 is a highly capable weapon system that provides Russia with a long-range precision strike capability, making it an important element of the country's strategic deterrent. According to several reports the Kh-101 It has been used by Russian forces in Syria to strike ISIS targets and is also deployed by the Russian forces in the Ukraine War 2022.

Kh-101 variants:

- Over the years, the Kh-101 has undergone several upgrades and modifications to improve its performance and capabilities. For example, a newer version, the Kh-102, was introduced in 2015, which reportedly has a longer range and improved accuracy compared to the Kh-101.
- In March 2024, it was revealed, that Russia forces have used a new version of the Kh-101 equipped with a new double warhead weighting 800 kg.

Technical Data

Design
The missile has a streamlined airframe, which is optimized for low observability and minimal radar cross-section. It has a length of approximately 7.5 m and a wingspan of about 4.4 m. It has several stealth features, including its airframe design, which reduces its radar cross-section, and its low-altitude flight profile, which allows it to fly under the radar and avoid detection.
Warhead
The Kh-101 can carry a variety of conventional or 20 kT nuclear warheads, including high explosive, penetrator, and cluster munitions. The missile equipped with a high-explosive or fragmentation warhead is designed to destroy ground targets such as buildings, bunkers, and military installations. The missile can also carry a penetrator warhead, which is designed to penetrate hardened and underground targets, such as reinforced concrete structures, bunkers, and tunnels as well as cluster munitions warhead, which can release multiple smaller sub-munitions to cover a larger area and destroy multiple targets. The missile armed with a conventional warhead has a range of up to 3,000 km. It has a weight of 2,200-2,400 kg and can carry a warhead weighing 400-450 kg.
Propulsion
The missile is powered by a turbofan engine and is capable of flying at a maximum speed of Mach 0.76. The engine is mounted at the rear of the missile and is fed by an air intake located on top of the fuselage.
Guidance System
The Kh-101 features advanced guidance and control systems, including inertial navigation, satellite navigation, and terrain mapping, which enable it to navigate and strike targets with high precision. It also has stealth features, such as a low radar cross-section, to make it difficult to detect and intercept. The CEP (Circular Error Probable) of the Kh-101 cruise missile is not publicly disclosed, but it is believed to be highly accurate, with estimates suggesting a CEP of less than 10 m.
Combat Use
The Kh-101 is primarily carried by Russia's strategic bombers, such as the Tu-95MS, Tu-160, and Tu-22M3, as well as the Tu-142 maritime surveillance aircraft. The missile's long range and high accuracy make it a valuable asset for the Russian military, providing the ability to strike strategic targets at long distances with minimal risk to aircraft and personnel. The missile has high accuracy due to its advanced guidance and control systems, including satellite navigation, terrain mapping, and inertial navigation. These systems allow the missile to navigate to its target with high precision, compensating for any deviations in flight path caused by factors such as wind or other environmental conditions.
