Admiral Grigorovich class frigate Admiral Essen visits Cyprus.

According to information published by Tass on September 23, 2021, along with its mission as part of the Navy’s standing Mediterranean task force, the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s frigate Admiral Essen has entered the Port of Limassol, Cyprus to replenish its supplies, the Fleet’s press office reported.

The Fleet’s press service recalled that Admiral Essen has been performing its assigned duties in the offshore maritime zone since August 2021. The Admiral Essen frigate is part of a new series of Project 11356R/M naval ships (the Project 11357 designation is also used). These frigates are designed to destroy enemy surface ships and vessels, submarines and ground installations, carry out patrols and defend sea lanes.

Admiral Essen is a frigate of the Admiral Grigorovich class of the Russian Navy. It is based with the Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol.

The Admiral Grigorovich class, also referred to as Krivak IV class, Russian designation Project 11356Р/М, is a class of frigates built by the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad for the Russian Navy and Indian Navy. Based on the Talwar class, six ships were ordered for the Russian Black Sea Fleet under two contracts in 2010 and 2011 as a complement to the Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates.

The Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate is armed with one 100 mm A-190 Arsenal naval gun, UKSK VLS (Vertical Launching System) cells able to launch Kalibr, Oniks or Zircon anti-ship cruise missiles, 24 3S90M VLS cells for 9M317M surface-to-air-missiles, two AK-630 CIWS (Close-In Weapon System), 8 Igla-S or Verba air defense missile systems, two double 533 mm torpedo tubes and one RBU-6000 rocket launcher.
