U.S. Army Awards $117M Contract for 82 AeroVironment P550 eVTOL Drones in First Full-Rate Production.


The U.S. Army has awarded AeroVironment a $117.3 million contract to procure 82 P550 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) unmanned aerial systems, marking the first full-rate production order for the platform and accelerating the service’s adoption of commercially derived autonomous capabilities. Announced by AeroVironment, the award strengthens the Army’s ability to conduct long-range reconnaissance, precision strike, and communications missions across contested battlefields while advancing its shift toward distributed, highly autonomous operations.

The P550 combines intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, precision strike, and communications relay capabilities in a single eVTOL aircraft that can operate without conventional runways. Its fielding highlights the growing importance of rapidly deployable autonomous systems in extending operational reach, improving force survivability, and supporting multi-domain operations against increasingly capable adversaries.

Announced on July 20, 2026, the contract was awarded under the U.S. Army's Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) through the Competitive Call for Solutions (C4S) process within the U.S. Army's Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Marketplace initiative. The procurement mechanism is intended to accelerate the adoption of proven commercial technologies, enabling the U.S. Army to shorten acquisition timelines while expanding battlefield capabilities through rapidly deployable autonomous systems.

Unlike many traditional defense acquisition programs that require years of development before entering production, the P550 has already accumulated operational experience with U.S. military organizations and allied users. The award suggests the U.S. Army considers the aircraft sufficiently mature for operational fielding, reflecting the service's increasing willingness to adopt commercially developed technologies that can be integrated more rapidly than bespoke military systems.

The contract supports the U.S. Army's Battalion Reconnaissance (UAS) effort, which aims to provide maneuver battalions with their own long-range intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capability. Organic reconnaissance assets reduce dependence on higher-echelon aviation support, allowing battalion commanders to detect, identify, and track enemy activity while supporting precision fires and maneuver decisions in near real time. As recent conflicts have demonstrated, reconnaissance drones have become indispensable not only for finding targets but also for maintaining battlefield awareness in environments where electronic warfare and dispersed operations challenge traditional command structures.

The P550 occupies the upper end of the Group 2 unmanned aerial system category, filling a capability gap between small backpack-portable reconnaissance drones and larger tactical unmanned aircraft. Compared with systems such as AeroVironment's own Puma AE, which is optimized primarily for intelligence collection, or the Textron Systems Aerosonde, which offers longer endurance but generally requires runway or launcher support, the P550 combines vertical take-off capability, substantial payload capacity, and extended endurance in a single aircraft. This combination gives maneuver units the ability to deploy advanced airborne capabilities without relying on dedicated launch infrastructure, an increasingly valuable advantage for expeditionary and distributed operations.

Its electric vertical take-off and landing configuration enables launch and recovery from confined spaces without catapults or runways, allowing operations from forest clearings, urban terrain, mountain positions, or temporary forward operating locations. This flexibility increases deployment options while reducing the logistical footprint normally associated with larger tactical reconnaissance aircraft.

According to AeroVironment, the P550 can remain airborne for up to five hours using an all-electric propulsion system while carrying payloads of up to 15 pounds (6.8 kg). The aircraft can be configured for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), communications relay, electronic warfare, or precision strike missions, allowing units to tailor capabilities to operational requirements.

A key feature of the P550 is its Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA), which allows the integration of third-party payloads, datalinks, mission-planning software, and future sensors. For the U.S. Army, this architecture offers greater flexibility to incorporate emerging technologies without extensive redesign, supporting incremental modernization while helping avoid dependence on proprietary solutions.

The aircraft can also be reconfigured in the field in less than five minutes. Operators can replace mission payloads and batteries without specialized tools, enabling a reconnaissance aircraft to transition rapidly into an electronic warfare asset, communications relay node, or precision strike system. Such flexibility supports the U.S. Army's objective of equipping maneuver formations with multi-role systems capable of adapting quickly to changing battlefield conditions.

Artificial intelligence further enhances the aircraft's operational capabilities. AeroVironment says the P550 incorporates AI-enabled autonomous functions designed to simplify mission execution, reduce operator workload, and improve navigation and decision-making in contested environments where communications may be degraded or satellite navigation disrupted. These autonomous functions are becoming increasingly important as military forces prepare to operate in battlespaces characterized by dense electronic warfare activity.

Commenting on the award, AeroVironment Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wahid Nawabi said adaptability has become a fundamental requirement for modern military operations, emphasizing that the P550 enables maneuver forces to rapidly reconfigure missions while extending operational reach in contested environments. Trace Stevenson, President of Autonomous Systems at AeroVironment, added that operators increasingly require systems capable of adapting at the speed of combat, highlighting the aircraft's ability to switch mission configurations within minutes rather than hours.

For AeroVironment, the award represents an important milestone. While the company has supplied the U.S. military for decades with tactical unmanned aerial systems including the Raven, Wasp AE, Puma AE, Jump 20, and the Switchblade family of loitering munitions, the P550 contract establishes the aircraft as a new production program within its expanding portfolio of autonomous systems. Successful execution could position the P550 for additional U.S. Army procurements and potential export opportunities as allied militaries seek similarly flexible reconnaissance capabilities.

The contract also illustrates how the U.S. Army continues to adapt its acquisition strategy. Through initiatives such as the UAS Marketplace and the Competitive Call for Solutions process, the service is increasingly selecting mature commercial technologies that can be integrated rapidly rather than relying exclusively on lengthy bespoke development programs. This approach reduces acquisition timelines while allowing operational units to receive updated capabilities more quickly.

Beyond the immediate procurement, the contract reflects the U.S. Army's continuing emphasis on rapidly fielding autonomous systems that can support dispersed operations in contested environments. Modern maneuver forces increasingly require reconnaissance assets capable of sensing, communicating, and, when required, delivering effects across multiple domains while operating with a reduced logistical footprint. By combining long endurance, vertical take-off capability, modular payload integration, AI-enabled autonomy, and rapid field reconfiguration, the P550 appears consistent with the U.S. Army's Multi-Domain Operations concept, which emphasizes distributed formations, resilient networks, and accelerated decision-making. In that context, the contract represents more than the acquisition of another Group 2 unmanned aerial system; it reflects the service's broader effort to equip tactical units with adaptable reconnaissance capabilities that can evolve alongside changing operational requirements.
