US Army's 4th Infantry Division receives first Stryker 8x8 armored vehicles to replace M1A2 Abrams tanks.


On September 2, 2026, the U.S. Army’s newly redesignated 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, received its first Stryker 8x8 armored vehicles at Fort Carson, Colorado, officially beginning its transition from heavy tracked armor. The force-structure shift converts the former 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team from an M1A2 Abrams and Bradley configuration into a lighter, wheeled formation totaling over 300 Stryker variants. This conversion supports the 4th Infantry Division’s December 2025 transfer to I Corps, enhancing rapid deployment capabilities and digital command-and-control integration across Indo-Pacific operational theaters.

The conversion replaces approximately 225 tracked vehicles (87 M1A2 Abrams tanks and 138 Bradley Fighting Vehicles), with more than 300 Stryker 8x8 variants, shifting the brigade's main combat power to dismounted infantry squads and specialized support platforms. The unit is concurrently undergoing personnel realignments, driver and maintenance retraining, and operational integration of the Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) software architecture tested during Project Convergence Capstone 6.

On September 2, 2026, the U.S. Army's newly redesignated 3rd Stryker Brigade, 4th Infantry Division began receiving its first Stryker 8×8 armored vehicles at Fort Carson, Colorado, roughly six weeks after its final M1A2 Abrams tank departed for Fort Irwin. The change converts the former 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team from an Abrams tank/Bradley IFV organization into the division's third Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Using standard brigade structures as a benchmark, the scale is roughly 87 M1A2 Abrams plus 138 Bradley vehicles, 225 tracked armored vehicles from those two families, compared with more than 300 Strykers in an SBCT. The Army has not released the 3rd Brigade's final Stryker quantity or variant allocation, making those figures force-structure benchmarks rather than confirmed Fort Carson inventories. The change also follows the 4th Infantry Division's December 5, 2025 transfer from III Armored Corps to I Corps, whose headquarters at Joint Base Lewis-McChord controls Army forces assigned to it for Indo-Pacific training, modernization, and deployment cycles.

Abrams tanks were already moving out by rail on June 16, and the last M1A2 remaining at Fort Carson departed by mid-July for Project Convergence Capstone 6 at the National Training Center; after PC-C6, those tanks were scheduled to enter Army depots for high-level maintenance and refurbishment before redistribution to other armored formations. Strykers are now arriving individually by commercial tractor-trailer and lowboy, after which soldiers unload, ground-guide, and stage them at Fort Carson. The brigade must then complete new equipment training covering vehicle capabilities, maintenance, digital systems, and operations, while additional infantry soldiers arrive to fill the manpower structure required by its new infantry battalions. The readiness problem is consequently simultaneous: hundreds of vehicles must be received and assigned while drivers, vehicle commanders, maintainers, infantry squads, platoons, company staffs and battalion headquarters convert to a different organization.

The numerical increase in armored vehicles does not translate into an equivalent increase in firepower. A standard ABCT benchmark of 87 Abrams and 138 Bradleys concentrates 225 tracked vehicles around tank and mechanized infantry combat, whereas an SBCT distributes more than 300 Strykers among troop transport and specialized functions. Its vehicle inventory can therefore include M1126 Infantry Carrier Vehicles, M1256 Double-V Hull infantry carriers, M1127 reconnaissance vehicles, M1130 command vehicles, M1131 fire support vehicles, M1132 engineer vehicles, M1133 medical evacuation vehicles, M1134 anti-tank vehicles, and M1129 120 mm mortar carriers. An infantry carrier can mount an M2 12.7 mm machine gun, M240B 7.62 mm machine gun, or Mk 19 40 mm automatic grenade launcher, while other Stryker configurations include FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missiles or 30 mm cannon armament. The important comparison is therefore 225 heavily combat-oriented Abrams and Bradley vehicles versus 300-plus Strykers distributed across combat, reconnaissance, command, engineering, medical and fire-support tasks, not simply 225 vehicles versus more than 300.

This changes where 3rd Brigade generates its combat power. Its former M1A2 companies brought 120 mm M256 tank guns, heavy armor and tracked cross-country mobility, while Bradley companies combined mechanized infantry with vehicle-mounted direct fire; an SBCT instead carries substantially more of its fighting strength in infantry squads and specialized teams whose Strykers provide protected movement. Anti-armor effects consequently shift toward FGM-148 Javelin teams, M1134 anti-tank vehicles, reconnaissance and supporting fires, while M1129 carriers provide organic 120 mm mortar fire. A mortar carrier can engage targets indirectly from defilade and an anti-tank missile can defeat armored vehicles at range, but neither performs the same close-combat function as an Abrams using a stabilized 120 mm cannon behind tank-level protection. The personnel realignment is therefore structurally important rather than administrative: additional infantry soldiers are required because more combat power resides outside vehicles after dismounting. Maintenance also moves from two tracked families, Abrams and Bradley, toward an 8×8 fleet, changing engines, drivetrains, suspension components, tires, recovery requirements, spare parts stocks, and mechanic training.

The mobility calculation is equally concrete. An M1A2 is a 70-ton-class vehicle, so brigade movement requires substantial rail capacity, heavy-equipment transporters, suitable bridges, recovery equipment, and fuel support; the brigade previously demonstrated that dependency when its Abrams were loaded onto railcars at Fort Carson for movement to Fort Irwin. Strykers remain armored vehicles requiring strategic transportation between continents and islands, but their lower mass and wheeled configuration allow longer self-deployment by road after arriving in theater and reduce reliance on heavy tank transporters. This distinction matters under I Corps because its Indo-Pacific area involves repeated transitions from ships and ports to road networks, staging locations, and dispersed operating areas rather than movement across one continuous continental front. The conversion therefore reduces the brigade's ground movement burden without solving the Pacific's basic maritime lift problem.

The digital change is more specific than simply giving the brigade a newer command network. PC-C6 ran at Fort Irwin from July 20 to July 29 and placed 4th Infantry Division soldiers and NGC2-equipped vehicles into division-scale evaluation after five Ivy Sting events and May's Ivy Mass exercise. NGC2 moves position data, operational graphics, fires information, and sustainment data across echelons through a common data-centric architecture integrating software, hardware, infrastructure, and network transport. The 4th Infantry Division implementation is led by Anduril, working with Palantir on an edge-to-cloud data mesh using Lattice and Foundry and with Raft on registries, data transformation and federation; the wider NGC2 effort incorporates capabilities from more than 60 companies. The Army had accumulated ten months of operational feedback before establishing the common data-layer baseline in June 2026, while Ivy Mass tested NGC2 across Fort Carson and Piñon Canyon against cyber and electromagnetic disruption.

The organizational result is an all-Stryker 4th Infantry Division. Its three maneuver formations are now the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Teams; 3rd SBCT contains 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry; 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry; 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry; 588th Brigade Engineer Battalion; and 64th Brigade Support Battalion. Above the brigades, division artillery includes 2nd Battalion, 12th Field Artillery; 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery; and 2nd Battalion, 77th Field Artillery, while the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade and 4th Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade provide aviation and sustainment capacity. The December 2025 reassignment gives I Corps direct management of the division's training cycles, modernization priorities, and deployment schedules without moving the division from Fort Carson. Instead of one division containing both medium Stryker and heavy Abrams-Bradley maneuver brigades, I Corps now receives a Fort Carson division standardized around three SBCTs, with heavier capabilities having to come from separate Army formations when required.
