U.S. Shifts Abrams Tank Battalion to Infantry Squad Vehicles for Faster Battlefield Mobility.


The Oregon National Guard redesignated the 3rd Battalion, 116th Cavalry Regiment as the 2nd Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment, creating the state’s first mobile infantry battalion. The shift replaces a heavy armored role with a lighter force built around Infantry Squad Vehicles, unmanned systems, and dispersed operations.

The new battalion trades M1A2 SEPv2 Abrams tanks and M2A3 Bradley fighting vehicles for a structure centered on nine-soldier Infantry Squad Vehicles, expanded drone employment, and greater tactical mobility. The change reduces protected direct-fire capacity while increasing deployability and placing greater reliance on anti-armor weapons, mortars, reconnaissance assets, and supporting fires.

The redesignation is not limited to the restoration of a historical infantry identity. The 2nd Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment reconnects with an Oregon infantry lineage dating back to 1888 and with service in the Pacific during World War II, while its new structure addresses a contemporary battlefield requirement: moving infantry under persistent drone surveillance and long-range fires without the weight and logistical burden of an armored formation. Oregon had already begun the transition in January, when a change of command ceremony marked the start of the move from armor to infantry.

According to a statement released by the Oregon National Guard on September 13, 2026, following a ceremony held the previous day in La Grande, the battalion is now intended to adopt a lighter and more mobile structure integrating Infantry Squad Vehicles and expanding the use of unmanned aerial systems. The contrast between its former and future equipment is substantial. An M1A2 SEPv2 Abrams weighs about 71.2 tons and is armed with a 120 mm main gun supplied with 42 rounds. The Infantry Squad Vehicle, by comparison, is an unarmored light tactical vehicle designed to carry a nine-soldier squad with a payload of about 1,450 kg. The ISV can be sling-loaded under a UH-60 Black Hawk, carried internally or externally by a CH-47 Chinook, and transported by C-130 or C-17 aircraft. Developed by GM Defense from the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 architecture, it also relies extensively on commercial components.

The increase in mobility comes with a clear reduction in protection and direct-fire capability. The ISV does not replace the Abrams as a protected direct-fire platform and is not intended to withstand heavy weapons fire. Its survivability depends more on speed, access to secondary routes, dispersion and the ability to relocate before an opposing sensor-to-shooter cycle is completed. For a mobile infantry unit, the vehicle is primarily a means of moving soldiers farther with less fatigue and more equipment, then allowing them to shift position quickly. The loss of heavy armor and a 120 mm gun therefore places greater reliance on dismounted anti-armor weapons, unmanned systems, mortars, and external fire support.

The U.S. Army’s emerging Mobile Brigade Combat Team concept provides some indication of how these capability gaps are expected to be addressed, although Oregon has not yet published the final table of organization and equipment for the 2-186 Infantry. Congressional Research Service documents based on Army information describe squads equipped with Javelin teams and Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles, while multipurpose companies combine mortar, reconnaissance and effects elements. The same structure increases the presence of small unmanned aircraft from squad to battalion level and incorporates loitering munitions, electronic warfare assets, and counter-small-UAS capabilities. Oregon’s September statement confirms only the integration of ISVs and the wider use of unmanned aircraft. It does not specify drone models, vehicle numbers, anti-armor allocations, or whether electronic warfare and counter-UAS teams will be organic to the battalion.

Another organizational point requires clarification. The Oregon battalion should not be described as simply remaining part of Idaho’s 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team while that brigade transitions toward a mobile formation. Information released by the Idaho National Guard in June indicated that its subordinate battalions from Oregon and Montana were converting to infantry and ending their affiliation with the brigade. Oregon’s January transition ceremony was presided over by the commander of the 82nd Troop Command Brigade, but official releases have not yet detailed the 2-186 Infantry’s future wartime command relationship. Oregon has also not stated where its former M1A2 Abrams and M2A3 Bradley inventories will be reassigned, even though both platforms remained central to the battalion’s live-fire training in 2023.

The reorganization gives the battalion a smaller deployment footprint and greater mobility. ISVs allow infantry squads to disperse over wider areas, use secondary routes, and reposition faster than troops moving primarily on foot, while unmanned aircraft can extend reconnaissance beyond line of sight and support target identification before direct contact. The tradeoff is lower protection and the loss of part of the unit’s organic shock capability. Against a mechanized opponent, such a force would need to avoid becoming fixed in open terrain and combine concealment, anti-armor teams, mortars, loitering munitions and supporting fires to compensate for the absence of tanks. Oregon plans to deploy a formed task force to Honduras in 2027, which could provide one of the first opportunities to train the new organization alongside partner forces.

For international observers, Oregon’s conversion illustrates a broader force-design dilemma facing Western armies rather than a move away from armored warfare. Lessons from Ukraine continue to underline the value of dispersion under persistent surveillance while also confirming the requirement for protected firepower. In selected formations, the U.S. Army is therefore accepting lower levels of protection in exchange for greater deployability, mobility and a larger volume of organic reconnaissance and sensing assets. European and allied forces pursuing their own balance between tanks, light vehicles, drones and precision weapons will closely examine whether units such as the 2-186 can preserve combat effectiveness in an environment where mobility itself is becoming an increasingly important element of survivability.
