U.S. Marines Deploy New Amphibious Combat Vehicles in Japan to Strengthen Indo-Pacific Readiness.
The U.S. Marine Corps has reinforced its forward-deployed combat presence in the Indo-Pacific as the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) brought its latest Amphibious Combat Vehicles (ACVs) ashore in Okinawa, Japan, from USS Rushmore (LSD 47), according to information released on July 23, 2026. The deployment strengthens the U.S.' ability to rapidly respond to crises and project amphibious combat power across the Western Pacific, where growing regional tensions require forces capable of deploying at short notice.
The arrival of the ACVs enhances the 31st MEU's ability to conduct ship-to-shore assaults, expeditionary operations, and littoral missions with enhanced mobility, protection, and firepower compared with previous platforms. Positioned close to key maritime flashpoints, the unit provides a persistent and combat-ready force that reinforces U.S. deterrence and operational flexibility across the Indo-Pacific.

The Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) is the U.S. Marine Corps' newest armored amphibious vehicle, replacing the aging Assault Amphibious Vehicle fleet after decades of service. Built by BAE Systems in partnership with Iveco Defence Vehicles, the 8×8 vehicle provides improved protection against mines, improvised explosive devices, and ballistic threats while delivering enhanced mobility at sea and on land. It is designed to carry Marines directly from amphibious warships to shore before continuing inland, giving assault forces greater protection and endurance during expeditionary operations.
The arrival of the ACVs also reflects the continued modernization of the 31st MEU, the only permanently forward-deployed Marine Expeditionary Unit in the U.S. Marine Corps. Assigned to III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF), the unit operates as a Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) that combines infantry, aviation, logistics, and command elements into a single self-sustaining formation capable of independent operations across the Indo-Pacific.
Its permanent presence in Japan is one of the U.S.' most significant operational advantages in the region. Unlike expeditionary units deploying from California or Hawaii, the 31st MEU already operates inside the Western Pacific. That positioning allows commanders to react within hours to developing situations, whether responding to natural disasters, evacuating civilians, reinforcing allies, or supporting combat operations.
The deployment aboard USS Rushmore demonstrates how the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps maintain a continuously available amphibious capability in the Indo-Pacific. Forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan, the dock landing ship is assigned to Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 7 and Commander, Task Force (CTF) 76, transporting Marines, armored vehicles, landing craft, and other equipment throughout the U.S. Seventh Fleet's area of operations.
That capability has become increasingly important as regional security conditions continue to evolve. China's expanding naval presence, growing military pressure around Taiwan, and persistent tensions in the East China Sea and South China Sea have increased demand for forces that can move rapidly between islands and coastal areas without relying on established ports or airfields. Amphibious ready forces provide that flexibility, enabling commanders to reposition combat units from the sea while remaining difficult to target and politically less dependent on host-nation infrastructure.
The 31st MEU also serves as one of the U.S. military's principal instruments for strengthening regional partnerships. Throughout the year, the unit trains with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the Philippine Marine Corps, the Australian Defense Force, the Republic of Korea Marine Corps, and other allied militaries. These exercises improve interoperability in amphibious operations, logistics, communications, and command structures, ensuring coalition forces can operate together effectively during both humanitarian missions and combat operations.
The introduction of the ACV further supports the U.S. Marine Corps' Force Design 2030 modernization effort. While much attention has focused on concepts such as distributed maritime operations and Marine Littoral Regiments, those concepts depend on modern amphibious equipment capable of moving forces between ships and shore under increasingly contested conditions. The ACV provides the protected mobility needed to support these operations while increasing the survivability of embarked Marines.
The arrival of the 31st MEU's latest ACVs in Japan therefore represents more than a routine equipment movement. It demonstrates how the U.S. Marine Corps continues to combine permanently forward-deployed forces with modern amphibious capabilities to sustain a credible expeditionary posture in the Indo-Pacific. With combat-ready Marines already positioned inside the theater, supported by forward-deployed amphibious warships, the United States retains the ability to respond quickly to emerging crises while reinforcing deterrence across one of the world's most strategically important regions.
