On July 2, 2026, U.S. Marines with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Marine Rotational Force - Darwin 26, fired a BGM-71 Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wireless-guided anti-tank missile during Exercise Southern Jackaroo 26 at Townsville Field Training Area in Queensland, Australia. Reported by the U.S. Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, the live-fire activity forms part of a trilateral training event between Australia, Japan, and the United States, aimed at strengthening combined combat readiness and interoperability across the Indo-Pacific.

The most important tactical element is the integration of a BGM-71 TOW launcher on an Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicle operating from a concealed firing position. Covered with camouflage netting and natural vegetation, the JLTV demonstrates how Marine anti-armor crews are training to reduce their visual signature before engaging. In a battlespace dominated by drones, thermal sensors, and persistent surveillance, concealment becomes a weapon in itself, allowing a firing team to stay hidden long enough to identify, engage, and survive.

The JLTV-mounted TOW configuration gives Marine units a mobile anti-armor capability with greater battlefield flexibility than a fixed firing position. Such training improves the practical details that matter in combat, including fire control procedures, target identification, communications, logistics coordination, and battle rhythm between allied units. In the Indo-Pacific, where forces may have to operate across vast distances and dispersed locations, this level of interoperability is not symbolic; it is operationally necessary.

For the U.S. Marine Corps, the event reflects the growing importance of Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations and stand-in force concepts. These ideas depend on small, mobile, low-signature units able to operate inside contested areas, support sea control, gather battlefield information, and deliver precision fires. A camouflaged JLTV armed with a TOW missile fits directly into this approach by combining concealment, mobility, and lethal anti-armor firepower in a compact tactical package.

Geostrategically, northern Australia gives the United States and its allies valuable strategic depth in the Indo-Pacific. Marine Rotational Force - Darwin provides a persistent U.S. rotational presence while strengthening military cooperation with Australia and Japan. By conducting live-fire training from Australian territory, the three partners demonstrate that they can generate credible combat power from dispersed regional locations, complicating any adversary’s planning and reinforcing deterrence.

Southern Jackaroo 26 shows that the United States, Australia, and Japan are moving beyond basic cooperation toward a more lethal and integrated ground combat network.
