U.S. Army Trains Swedish UH-60M Helicopter Unit To Conduct Air Assault Operations.
With support from the U.S. Army, Sweden is preparing its U.S.-built UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to insert combat troops directly into contested areas, with U.S. Army aviators training Swedish crews for higher-risk air-assault missions. The effort moves Sweden beyond routine helicopter transport toward combat air mobility able to reinforce threatened sectors or place infantry rapidly on key terrain.
The training builds the mission planning, survivability, and air-ground coordination needed to operate helicopters closer to enemy forces and air defenses. For Sweden, this strengthens its ability to conduct fast, flexible troop movements in high-intensity warfare and expands the Black Hawk’s value as a battlefield maneuver platform.

Four New York Army National Guard aviators worked with personnel from the Swedish Air Force’s 2nd Helicopter Battalion at Malmen Air Base near Linköping on August 25 and 26, 2026, as part of the State Partnership Program linking Sweden and the New York National Guard. According to the New York National Guard, Swedish crews have experience with air movement, casualty evacuation and special operations support but had not previously trained to conduct U.S.-style air-assault operations, making the exchange an early step toward a new battlefield employment concept for the country’s Black Hawk fleet.
The distinction is operationally important. Air movement is primarily a logistical function in which troops and equipment are carried between locations outside the immediate effects of enemy fires, while air assault requires helicopters to move combat-ready troops into or near hostile areas where they can seize, secure or reinforce terrain. U.S. Army doctrine therefore links helicopter movements with ground maneuver, electronic warfare, counterfires, suppression of enemy air defenses, supporting fires and tightly controlled airspace.
Lt. Col. Eric Fritz, commander of the U.S. Army New York Army National Guard’s 3rd Battalion, 142nd Assault Helicopter Battalion, said an air-assault operation can require about 96 hours to plan, synchronize and execute. The American instructors focused on air-ground integration, mission planning, mission command, risk management and aircraft survivability, all of which become critical when helicopters must approach landing zones under potential observation or fire from enemy forces.
Sweden operates the UH-60M under the designation Helikopter 16, or HKP 16, as part of its military helicopter force. The New York National Guard report states that Sweden operates 16 UH-60Ms organized into two battalions, while Swedish military documentation confirms the UH-60M Black Hawk as the aircraft type assigned the HKP 16 designation.
The U.S.-made UH-60M helicopter gives Sweden a capable tactical transport helicopter around which an air-assault mission can be built. Powered by two T700-GE-701D turboshaft engines, the aircraft combines troop lift, external cargo carriage, digital flight controls and modern cockpit systems with the performance needed to move soldiers and supplies rapidly across difficult terrain. Its role can include troop insertion, casualty evacuation, resupply and support to special operations, giving commanders a flexible means of moving forces when roads are slow, exposed or unavailable.
Its combat value, however, depends on far more than speed and payload. In an air-assault operation, helicopters must approach landing zones without becoming easy targets for short-range air defenses, portable surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft guns, electronic warfare systems and small-arms fire. This makes route selection, terrain masking, threat intelligence, suppression of enemy air defenses and coordination with artillery or other supporting fires central to whether troops can reach the landing zone and begin fighting effectively.
The war in Ukraine has reinforced how dangerous the modern battlefield has become for helicopters operating close to enemy forces. Dense air-defense networks, portable missiles, electronic surveillance, and widespread unmanned aerial vehicles have reduced rotary-wing aircraft's freedom to operate openly at low altitude, increasing the importance of very low-level flight, deception, carefully selected routes, and short exposure times around contested landing zones. For Sweden, learning U.S. Army air-assault doctrine therefore involves not only how to insert troops, but how to preserve helicopters and crews while doing so.
This survivability challenge is especially relevant against Russia’s layered air-defense capabilities. Any future NATO air-assault operation in Northern or Eastern Europe would have to account for radar-guided surface-to-air missiles, short-range air defenses and man-portable systems capable of threatening helicopters well before they reach an objective. Swedish UH-60Ms would consequently need to operate as part of a broader combined-arms effort in which electronic warfare, reconnaissance, fires and suppression measures reduce enemy detection and engagement opportunities.
Sweden has already used the HKP 16 for missions requiring tactical flexibility, including transport and support to special operations. Developing an air-assault role would extend this experience toward conventional maneuver warfare, allowing Swedish helicopters eventually to insert infantry behind terrain obstacles, reinforce an exposed defensive sector, secure bridges or other key locations, or shift troops between parts of the battlefield faster than ground vehicles could arrive.
That capability is particularly relevant in Sweden and across the Nordic-Baltic region. Forests, lakes, islands, long distances and restricted road networks can slow mechanized movement, while helicopter-borne infantry can bypass those obstacles and rapidly concentrate combat power at selected points. In a NATO reinforcement scenario, this could support the defense of key infrastructure, movement corridors, ports, airfields or other terrain essential to sustaining Allied forces in Northern Europe.
The strategic context has become more important since Sweden joined NATO in March 2024. NATO has reinforced its eastern flank from the Arctic to the Black Sea in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and what the Alliance describes as increasingly frequent hostile actions against NATO members and partners, including airspace violations, cyber activity and sabotage. Sweden’s geographic position strengthens the Alliance’s northern defense architecture and increases the value of forces able to move quickly across Scandinavian terrain and integrate with U.S. and other NATO formations.
For Swedish aviation, NATO interoperability therefore goes beyond flying compatible helicopters. Air-assault operations require Swedish crews, infantry commanders, and supporting units to understand common procedures for mission planning, fire support, airspace control, threat suppression, and command and control so they can participate in larger multinational operations without delays or coordination gaps.
The Swedish effort should not be interpreted as simply adding another transport task to the Black Hawk. It represents the beginning of a doctrinal shift in which UH-60Ms could become part of a synchronized combat maneuver, moving soldiers to locations selected for tactical effect while relying on intelligence, electronic warfare, and supporting fires to reduce the risks of operating inside contested airspace.
The next stage could move Swedish personnel closer to practical execution. Swedish pilots, planners and maintainers are expected to travel to the United States in 2027 when the New York Army National Guard’s 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation conducts air-assault training with the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, exposing Swedish crews to the integration of assault helicopters with an infantry formation during a larger maneuver rather than treating aviation solely as a transport element.
That progression is important because the effectiveness of UH-60M air assault depends as much on combined-arms coordination as on helicopter performance. A Black Hawk can move troops rapidly, but surviving long enough to deliver them against a defended objective requires synchronized intelligence, fires, electronic warfare, airspace control, and threat suppression before and during the insertion.
The August 2026 exchange does not mean Sweden already possesses a mature air-assault capability. Its significance lies in establishing the doctrine, planning procedures, and operational relationships needed to transform the country’s Black Hawk force from primarily tactical transport into a more integrated combat-mobility capability that can operate alongside U.S. and NATO formations.
For Sweden, that evolution could significantly increase the battlefield value of its UH-60Ms without requiring an entirely new helicopter type. By moving from air movement toward integrated air assault, Swedish forces could gain a faster means of placing combat-ready infantry at decisive points across the Nordic-Baltic theater, strengthening reinforcement options and NATO mobility at a time when Russia’s military posture and the lessons of the Ukraine war are driving renewed attention to survivability and rapid maneuver across Europe’s northern flank.
