U.S. Army Tests M119 Howitzer Deployment with MV-22B Tiltrotor Aircraft for Rapid Pacific Gun Raids.


The U.S. Army has tested moving an M119 105mm howitzer beneath a U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft in Hawaii, demonstrating a joint method for launching rapid artillery raids across dispersed Pacific terrain. The concept could let Army gun crews use the Osprey’s range and speed to bypass roads, establish temporary firing positions, and deliver fires from locations an adversary can't easily predict.

The combination gives light artillery units a way to shoot and relocate before enemy surveillance drones and counter-battery systems can complete their targeting cycle. In a Pacific conflict, that mobility could improve survivability while allowing U.S. forces to generate responsive firepower across widely separated islands and coastal positions

The service says the event supports Long-Range Maritime Air Assault Operations and the rapid movement of combat power across the Pacific, directly linking the drill to the mobility problems U.S. forces expect to face across widely separated islands and coastal areas.

The significance goes beyond demonstrating that an MV-22B Osprey can lift a field gun. In a conflict in the western Pacific, U.S. forces could face Chinese reconnaissance satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic surveillance and long-range precision fires capable of detecting and attacking artillery positions soon after they begin operating. A gun raid reduces that vulnerability by compressing the sequence from insertion to firing and displacement.

The M119A3 is well suited to that mission because it weighs about 2,225 kg (4,700 lb) and is specifically designed as an air-assault-capable 105 mm howitzer. It can fire standard ammunition to approximately 14 km and rocket-assisted projectiles to about 19.5 km, while its maximum rate of fire reaches six rounds per minute. Its digital fire-control system also reduces dependence on lengthy manual positioning procedures, an important advantage when crews need to establish a firing point quickly and leave before counterfire arrives.

The MV-22B tiltrotor aircraft changes the potential scale of such operations. The U.S. Marine Corps literature has cited a combat radius of roughly 650 km (350 nautical miles) for the tiltrotor aircraft under specified mission conditions, far beyond the radius normally associated with conventional utility helicopters, while its higher cruise speed lets troops and equipment cover large maritime distances more quickly. That published figure should not be interpreted as a demonstrated 350-nautical-mile radius while carrying an M119 externally, however, because sling loads increase drag and fuel consumption and the Army has not released the distance flown during the August exercise.

Even with that limitation, combining the MV-22B Osprey's tiltrotor aircraft reach with a light howitzer creates a potentially useful tactical option for contested-island warfare. Instead of keeping artillery concentrated at established bases, commanders could move a gun section to an austere landing area, deploy the M119, conduct a short fire mission against a designated target, and recover the weapon before hostile intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets can pinpoint its location for attack.

That shoot-and-scoot cycle is becoming increasingly important as drones make artillery positions harder to conceal. Recent conflicts have demonstrated how quickly unmanned aircraft can detect firing positions and pass coordinates to artillery, loitering munitions or missile units. In the Pacific, geography compounds the problem: roads may not connect firing positions, ports and airfields could be targeted, and forces may need to move between islands rather than simply along a ground maneuver corridor.

The concept also represents a significant development from earlier 25th Infantry Division M119 gun raids in Hawaii. In June 2020, U.S. Army units at Schofield Barracks conducted three-gun air-assault raids in which UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters sling-loaded M119A3 howitzers from one training area to another before crews rapidly established firing positions. Those drills proved the basic ability to combine light artillery with helicopter mobility, but the latest event introduces Marine Corps tiltrotor aviation and is explicitly connected to long-range maritime operations.

That difference is operationally important. A Black Hawk artillery raid is primarily suited to rapidly repositioning guns within a tactical land area, while an MV-22B Osprey-supported raid potentially extends the same concept over much greater distances and across maritime gaps. In an Indo-Pacific contingency, that could allow a light artillery detachment to bypass damaged roads, mountainous terrain, or stretches of ocean that would otherwise require sealift.

The M119's relatively short range compared with 155 mm artillery remains a constraint. Its maximum 19.5 km reach with rocket-assisted ammunition means the gun must be positioned much closer to the supported force or target than longer-range artillery systems. Air mobility partially offsets that weakness by moving the howitzer itself closer to the area where fires are required rather than forcing commanders to depend exclusively on greater projectile range.

For a real combat mission, however, the howitzer is only one element of the problem. Ammunition, gun crews, fire-control personnel, communications equipment, and security teams must also move with or shortly after the weapon. The Army has not disclosed how it transported ammunition during the August drill, how many Ospreys participated, how long emplacement and extraction took, or whether the training progressed to a live-fire phase.

These details will determine whether the concept can mature from sling-load proficiency into a repeatable long-range gun-raid capability. A successful operational model would require aircraft availability, tightly coordinated airspace, rapid target acquisition and a preplanned extraction sequence designed to move the artillery section before enemy drones or counter-battery radars can locate it.

The experiment nevertheless fits the broader direction of U.S. Army operations in the Indo-Pacific, where formations are increasingly expected to disperse, operate from austere locations and shift combat power between islands rather than depend on a small number of large bases. Japan and Australia are confronting similar mobility requirements as they adapt their forces for operations across archipelagos and long coastlines. The ability to combine relatively light artillery with long-range vertical lift could therefore have relevance beyond the U.S. Army, particularly for allied forces seeking to disperse firing units while retaining enough mobility to avoid becoming fixed targets.

The U.S. Army August 2026 exercise does not yet prove that an M119 battery can conduct a 650 km (350-nautical-mile) combat gun raid or survive against an integrated Chinese reconnaissance and strike network. It demonstrates a potentially important shift from helicopter-supported tactical artillery movement to joint Army-Marine long-range maritime artillery raids, where survival increasingly depends on how quickly a gun can arrive, fire, and disappear.
